Richard Sheldon Obituary

October 20, 1935 - January 6, 2016 Richard Sheldon, once hailed as "the number one Savoyard now living in America," died last Wednesday, after complications from a fall. Born in York, England, Sheldon was musical from an early age, entertaining shipmates while traveling between India and Africa with the British military. He enjoyed a life-long passion for the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, performing with many well-known artists from the famed D'Oyly Carte opera company. Sheldon came to America in 1965 and founded Opera A La Carte in 1970 with the goal of presenting the works of Gilbert and Sullivan as closely as possible to the original productions. The Southern California company quickly expanded and began touring the United States extensively. Sheldon's exacting artistic standards and devotion to authenticity made Opera A La Carte productions the "genuine article." The company remains committed to Sheldon's vision by continuing to produce high quality Gilbert and Sullivan. Sheldon was known for his quirky wit, his irascible temper, and his extraordinary kindness to his closest friends. He is survived by his daughter Susan and grandson Wyatt, of Thornton, Colorado; and his partner of many years, Kirkland Ward.

Nearly a year and a half since we said goodbye, my old friend, my coach, my mentor. For 33 years we tread the boards together, and never knew a more joyous time. Your mastery, your kindness and your friendship remain cherished. You never could be replaced, and your memory will never fade. I miss you, Richard.

I am so sorry to be so late and knowing about the death of my dear friend Richard Shelton. We were both and arts conventions together over the years. He was such a sweet funny wonderful English gentleman. And even though I haven't seen him in a while I am so sorry to hear about his death

Although I only worked with Mr. Sheldon and Opera A La Carte for a short time around 1975, it remains a fond and indelible memory. Thanks to Richard and condolences to his family and all who knew him.

I played in Opera A La Carte's orchestra for several years in the 1980s. I loved Richard's sense of humor, which ranged from dry and witty to downright bawdy.

So I'm sad to see this obit, but I say, "Thank you, Richard, for some great years! It was great knowing you."

I worked with him many years ago in L.A. & became friends here in New York City with 2 instrumentalists who played for Richard's troupe. Very sad to hear of his passing.
