Robert Margulies Obituary

MARGULIES, Robert S. Age 81, of Manhattan Beach. Passed away on July 5, 2009 after a long illness. He is survived by his loving wife Helen, his two sons Tom and Jim, his brother Edward, Helen's children Jon and Becky Yates, and three grandchildren. Born in Brooklyn, he graduated from Brooklyn College and Brown University, and studied advanced physics at Cornell University. He was an important member of the team that designed the first nuclear reactor built at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island. He moved to California in 1956 where he worked with Space Technology Labs. He was a master of computer languages. Most of his professional career was spent at TRW in Redondo Beach as a senior scientist. He had a lifelong interest in music. For decades he served on the board of directors of the South Bay Chamber Music Society. He served on the Executive Board of Sundays Live, and was among those who fought to preserve its concert series from the budgetary knife of the LA County Museum of Art. A skilled clarinet player, he also organized and played with a woodwind quintet and performed locally for more than two decades.
