Robert Robaire Obituary

December 25, 1922 - December 12, 2022 Robert "Papouche" Robaire passed away on December 12th, just two weeks shy of his 100th birthday. He was a beloved husband for 67 years to his loving wife Mona, adored father by son Jean, cherished grandfather to Daniel, David and Julian and much-loved great-grandfather to Ellia, Mila and Matisse. Born in Tunisia in 1922, Papouche moved to Los Angeles after World War II, eventually opening his much-acclaimed Robaire's French Restaurant in 1952. A true pioneer in the restaurant business, introducing French cooking for the first time to thousands of Angelino palettes and Godfather to so many LA restaurateurs, his legendary restaurant became the "in" place where the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Louis Armstrong, William Holden and countless other celebrities enjoyed French cuisine in the charm of it's French bistro-like atmosphere. Papouche was loved by so many for his Mediterranean warmth, his amazing sense of humor, his contagious charm and smile, his unlimited generosity, his elegance and heart of gold. He will be sorely missed by all those lucky enough to have known him.

Services will be held Friday, December 16 at noon at Hillside Memorial,
6001 West Centinela Avenue, Los Angeles, 90045.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Blind Children's Center, Los Angeles, an organization close to his heart.

Mr Robaire was the kindest most helpful man I have ever met. His generosity towards fellow Tunisians is legendary and will keep him as an icon in the collective memory of Tunisian Americans

One of my first introductions to 'la cuisine française' was in the 1950's when I was taken along with my brother to Robaire's on La Brea by our paternal grandparents who lived in Westwood. Some sixty-five years later for the past twenty years my husband and I have been living an exceptional life of joy and serenity in southwest France , enjoying the pleasures of French cuisine both at home and in restaurants. The lovely qualities of Robaire's character are mirrored in many of our French friends. Wishing peace and loving memories to his family and friends.

When I was smitten by a beautiful young woman 52 years ago, I planned a three-place date to impress her, going from Cafe Figaro, to Robaire's for dinner, to the Chart House in Malibu. We've now been married 51 years, so Merci et Bon Voyage a M. Robaire. So many memories.
