Robert Roberson Obituary

Judge Robert L. Roberson, Jr. (Ret.) passed away on February 16, 2016. He was 84 years old. Judge Roberson will be sorely missed by those of us who knew him and valued his friendship. Judge Roberson began his career as an attorney in 1959. He later joined a law firm of African American attorneys in 1968, that later became the law firm of Scarlett and Roberson. After 20 years of an illustrious career in both criminal and civil law, Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. appointed him to the Los Angeles Superior Court in 1979. He sat in both the Criminal and Civil Trial Courts until 1987. In 1988, Judge Roberson was appointed to the Court's Appellate Department. From 1991 to 1996, Judge Roberson served as Presiding Judge of the Appellate Department of the Los Angeles Superior Court. Judge Roberson retired from the bench in January, 1999. Judge Roberson volunteered his time in the community and was a member of numerous organizations including the Los Angeles County Bar Association, U.S.C. Law School Alumni Association, the Los Angeles Criminal Courts Bar Association, the John M. Langston Bar Association, the California Association of Black Lawyers, and the Omega Psi Phi, Inc., just to name a few. Judge Roberson leaves to cherish his memory his wife, of over 60 years, Phyllis; daughter, Jan De Andrade, Esq. (Dieco); grandchildren, Ariana Roland and Charles Roland IV; great grandchild, Savannah Holland; Sisters, Betty Barrington, Esq., and Sharon Duncan; brothers, Danny McDaniel (Shirley), Carl Roberson (Terry), Kenneth Roberson, Esq. (Felecia), Tony Roberson, and Gary Roberson; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and loving friends and colleagues. Visitation Wednesday 4:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. Woods-Valentine Mortuary, 1455 N. Mr. Roberson, was a wonderful man, partner to my Uncle Charles Redmond Scarlett at Scarlett and Robeson for 20 years. His daughter Jan de Andrade, Esq. and his lovely and nice wife Phyllis were equally kind and loving. God bless his soul, memory offspring and his legacy. Rest in peace Mr. Robeson

Judge Roberson, Some of my most cherished memories are of working with you in the Appellate Department of the Superior Court from 1988 to 1993. You were a kind and happy person with a wonderful sense of humour. Thank you for teaching me to honour the human spirit.

Judge Roberson was a keen jurist and an even better person. I will always the smile and twinkle in his eyes whenever he spoke of his family, especially his grandkids. RIP Judge!
