Roma Cockins Obituary

COCKINS , Roma Rutherford
(1912-2007) passed away peacefully at her home in Santa Monica on April 29, 2007 at the age of 95 years.
Roma was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 6, 1912 to Francis and Elva Rutherford. Her father, at that time, was a prominent architect in Salt Lake City. When Roma was nine, her family decided they would rather live in Southern California and moved the family to Venice. Later on they moved to Santa Monica. Roma graduated from Santa Monica High School and established a highly successful Interior Decorator business.
She and her husband, William Welch Cockins, Jr., enjoyed traveling to many countries around the world. Bill passed away on January 7, 1982. They made many friends on their travels, and Roma continued to take trips with them. Roma always maintained her Santa Monica home and garden in excellent condition. Over the years, Roma's home and garden were featured on garden tours and television commercials. Roma enjoyed playing bridge on a frequent basis with her friends. Her favorite sport was tennis. Her brother Whitley passed away in Kanosh, Utah in 1989.
For many years, Roma was an active member of the Half-Timers of the Santa Monica Assistance League. She was a generous supporter of many charitable and civic organizations in the Santa Monica area, including the Santa Monica Family YMCA and the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Club.
She is survived by her brother Francis Crane Rutherford of Port Orchard, Washington. She is also survived by her husband Bill's children, Susan Burnett of Mancos, Colorado, Patricia Lund of Napa, California and Bill Cockins of Palm Desert, California and by her brother Whitley's children, Michael Rutherford of Kanosh, Utah and Dwight Rutherford of Roseville, California. Getty Rutherford and her daughter Desiree are also part of the Rutherford family.
At her request, there will be no services.
