Sister Catherine McShane

Sister Catherine was born in Legga, Co. Longford, Ireland, to Michael and Margaret (Reilly) McShane on April 18, 1931. She is survived by her sister, Sr. Teresa McShane, DMJ, of Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Catherine died peacefully at St. John of God Care Center, Los Angeles, on November 24, 2025. Predeceased by her parents, her sisters Mary Anne Maguire, Margaret McShane, Anne Caddell and her brother Michael, and several nieces and nephews. Catherine entered the Daughters of Mary and Joseph in Ireland in 1950. After her Profession of Vows in 1952, Catherine came to California and taught in several schools - Our Lady of Peace, Sepulveda; St. Augustine's, Culver City; Our Lady of the Rosary, Paramount; St. Anthony, El Segundo where she was Principal, and back to St. Augustine's as Principal in 1972. A new mission in New Mexico opened in 1977 and Catherine joined the community and was Principal and teacher in Annunciation School, Albuquerque, and later in San Miguel, Socorro. Following her time in New Mexico, Catherine taught at St. Jerome's School, Los Angeles. It was time for a change of pace and in 1988 she enjoyed a sabbatical in New Mexico. Catherine returned to Los Angeles to assume the position of Provincial Treasurer. In 1994, she served as Provincial of the DMJ Community in CA. Upon completion of her term of office, Catherine, who still had boundless energy and a willing heart to serve, ministered as Director of Admissions in Nazareth House, Cheviot Hills for the next 14 years. She finally retired to Marian Residence, Palos Verdes, in 2014, where her leisure time afforded her the space to knit and crochet to her heart's content, not forgetting to keep up with the Dodgers. Catherine is sadly missed by her sister, Sr. Teresa, and by her Community of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph and her circle of friends. The Daughters of Mary and Joseph extend their deep gratitude to the Sisters and staff of Marian Residence and St. John of God Care Center for their loving care of Catherine. Mass of Christian Burial on December 19th 12:00 noon, Holy Redeemer Chapel, Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City.
