Bill Carter, 77, beloved husband to Carolyn, father to Dave, Matt, Tim and Joe and grandfather to 11 grandchildren, passed away on January 4th, 2010.
Bill and Carolyn celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this past year. They both shared in their love of God, family, firm (Ernst & Young) and the communities where they lived and served. Bill's parents, Virgil and Waneta, instilled his values early as he was raised in Sharpsville, IN, the son of a grocer and nurse. After graduating from Ball State University in 1954, Bill served two years in the Army and then later applied his learning as a certified public accountant and leader. Bill maintained a long career with Ernst & Young where he served as the Managing Partner in Indianapolis and finally in Los Angeles as Vice Chairman and Managing Partner of the Western Region of the firm, until his retirement in 1991. He passionately served his community including as a board member with Purdue's Krannert School of Management, as trustee emeritus for Butler University and Chairman of United Way of Central Indiana. He also served on the boards of Ball State University Foundation, the Indianapolis Zoological Society, Goodwill Industries, the Los Angeles Music Center, the California and Indianapolis Chambers of Commerce and a number of professional and civic organizations throughout his lifetime. In 1980, Bill was elected to the Ball State University Hall of Fame and was later named as a Distinguished Alumnus.
Bill is survived by his wife Carolyn; sons, Dave (Jill) of Seattle, WA, Matt (Leslie) of Indianapolis, IN, Tim (Colleen) of Cleveland, OH, and Joe (Greg) of Los Angeles, CA; and grandchildren, Emily, Mallory, Casey, Elliott, AJ, Katelin, Elizabeth, Abigail, Katherine, and Sam; brother, Richard (Linda) of Westfield, IN. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Ben.
The whole Carter family welcomes all friends, family and acquaintances as we celebrate Bill's life at a memorial service to be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 8, 2010 at Carmel United Methodist Church, 621 S. Range Line Road, Carmel, Indiana. Friends are invited to call at the church from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm Thursday, January 7 and again on Friday one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Goodwill Industries Foundation, the Indianapolis Zoological Society or Carmel United Methodist Church.
