William Zimmerman Obituary

Zimmerman D.D.S., William John June 9, 1922 - November 10, 2012 William John Zimmerman passed away peacefully on November 10, 2012 after a wonderful 90 year life. Bill was born in Los Angeles to William and Lauretta Zimmerman. He graduated from Loyola High School and Loyola University. He proudly volunteered for service as a U.S. Marine dive bomber pilot in the South Pacific during WWII. He carried the love of flying and the Corps throughout his adult life. He flew 83 combat missions, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal, Presidential Citation from F.D.R., and a Navy Commendation Medal from Adm. Halsey plus numerous citations. After active duty, he instructed Navy cadets in flying aerobatics. He graduated from USC dental school in 1953 and began his professional dental practice while also teaching at the Dental school. Bill opened his dental office on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1961 and built a successful practice there for over 30 years. Bill is survived by his devoted wife Nancy, of 59 years, his brother Msgr. Roland Zimmerman, his five children, eleven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Flying was Bill?s first love and his favorite hobby was flying aerobatics off the Palos Verdes coast in his restored, 1941, yellow Stearman biplane. He will be remembered as a wonderful optimistic man who loved his family and enjoyed a full life. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations in Bill?s memory to the charity of your choice.

Memories and Condolences
for William Zimmerman

Not sure what to say?

December 8, 2012

My prayers go out to the Zimmermann family, who are my cousins, which we have not kept in touch for many years. He was my dentist as a child as well. His children learned how to swim in our pool in Westchester. Everyone send their love to you and hope you will get through this with a lot of fond memories. Just a side note Marian is still alive with Dementia at the age of 96 soon to be 97 next month. Take care and God Bless. Mari Lynne Kennedy ( Zimmermann )

My deepest sympathy to the Zimmerman family. I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Zimmerman for 10 fun packed years. A wonderful Dentist, a wonderful man, a wonderful life. Every time I see a biplane I think of him and the time he took flying. What a ride! I think that's what he is saying now.

To my friend Bill and the entire Zimmerman family, my deepest sympathy on the passing of your Husband, Father, Brother, and Grandfather.
I know from listening to Bill's retelling of many of his father's exploits that he lived life to the fullest. I will keep your family in my prayers this Holiday Season.

My deepest sympathy to Dr. Zimmerman's family - I am quite sure he touched the lives of many over the years.

He was my first dentist when my family moved to PV from Denver in 1962 and I really miss his gentle, kind spirit. His advice to me was to take care of my teeth because it will be hard to fit dentures due the bony spurs - he certainly had the big picture - I was only 13! I've followed his advice and have no need for dentures - yet!

My dad was an Army Air Corps flight surgeon in WWII and a "wanna be" pilot. I bought Dad "a ticket to ride" in Dr. Zimmerman's infamous yellow Stearman and Dad was absolutely thrilled - and green - when they landed after a few aerobatic loops! Now they have both joined all their flying buddies in the squadron in the sky. May God bless him and all of his family.
