WAGRAM — After a brief and sudden illness, Archibald Monroe McLean Jr. passed away on May 8, 2016 at his home in the loving arms of his family.
Archibald was born in the McLean family home on March 17, 1940 to Archibald Monroe and Mary Dunlap McLean of Wagram. He married the love of his life, Frances Harper McLean, on Dec. 18, 1965 and together they had two children. He worked tirelessly with his brother John for many years on the farm on which they were raised. Over the years, together with his partners he owned and operated many businesses: General Tire Company, Briarwood Apartments, The Body Shoppe Health Club, and Carolina Supply Company were among a few. Later he began Carolina Crating in Laurinburg and ran it until his death with his dear friends and partners Linda Pate and Cathy Boone.
A Godly man, Archibald worked tirelessly every day until his illness. He put God first and believed in love of family, traditional Christian values and a hard day's work. He loved a good tale and never met a stranger. One of his greatest pleasures was spending time with family and friends reminiscing and creating new memories for future stories. He was never happier than when he was watching the boats go by on the porch at the beach or fishing in the ocean in his boat or flying his plane over the fields at dusk looking at the crops and watching the deer graze on the new grass. He found pleasure in things most people take for granted: the rainbow after the rain, the greenness of the grass in spring, a newly plowed field or the smell of gardenias in bloom.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Archibald Monroe McLean III, and his brother, John Malloy McLean. Surviving are his wife Frances of the home, daughter Mary Chase McLean (Joe) Greene, the light of his life, his granddaughter Caitlin Elizabeth Greene of Wagram, sisters-in-law Clara Harper (Bruce) Robertson of Williamsburg Virginia, Elizabeth Harper of New York, New York, and Sylvia McLean of Wagram, brother-in-law Walter (Kim) Harper of West End, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
The family will receive friends at McDougald Funeral Home in Laurinburg on Tuesday from 6-8 pm. A celebration of his life will be held at Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church in Laurinburg at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, family request that contributions be made to the scholarship fund at Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church, 15301 McFarland Rd, Laurinburg, NC 28352, or Scotland Regional Hospice, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.
