John Arthur Johnson
LAURINBURG — John Arthur Johnson departed this life on Dec. 10, 2025, after a short illness.
He was born Sept. 7, 1924, to the late George W. Johnson and Annie Bell Floyd Johnson. He attended school in Alma, NC and was a faithful lifetime member of Williams Chapel AME Zion Church.
John was 101 years old and was married to his beloved wife Lucy Hayes Chambers Johnson for 80 years before she preceded him in death. He and his wife raised 12 children, two of whom also preceded him in death.
He was a husband, father and grandfather. He was a unique and humble soul with a kind heart and gentle spirit, and was loved by all who knew him. He was well known for beating any and everyone in a game of checkers.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters: Louise Johnson of the home, Helen J. Heath of Fayetteville NC, Pauline Drakeford, Joan J. Adams, Mamie J. Nykudi (Mack), and Christine Johnson; his sons: Rev. John W. Johnson (Lillie), Rev. Willie Johnson (Barbara) of Orlando, Florida, LaVerne Johnson and David Johnson (Rebecca) of Maxton; a brother-in-law, Alexander Fairley Jr., of Maxton; 33 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grands and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025, at Williams Chapel AME Zion Church, Maxton, NC.
