I just saw this and I am sad that this wonderful educator is gone. I had him for two of my classes at Long Beach City College and worked with him on political issues in the seventies. I had never been much of a History buff, but he taught me to appreciate it. He wrote a great book about the history of California, and he taught me to stop at those historical markers to read them.

To Dr. Barger's family and friends, I offer my sincere sympathy.

He was my history teacher at Hoover Jr. High School in the late 1950's. I'll never forget his love of history and the wonderful feeling that he cared about me as an individual.

Also, the one history lesson I remember best from Dr. Barger's class is how horrifying war is . . . a total breakdown in human communication. I first learned that from his teachings in 8th grade.

He contributed so much to so many lives. I wish I had told him this before he left us.

Sincerely,
Peggy Heard

My sincere sympathy goes out to the family of Bob Barger. My fond memories of Mr. Barger come from before he became a history professor at Long Beach City College way back in 1960 at Hoover Junior High School where I was in 9th grade and he was my German teacher. He always made class fun and treated each student in a friendly manner. Mr.(Dr.)Barger was definitely a favorite teacher of mine and I became an elementary school teacher.

My heartfelt condolences for Dr. Barger's family in his passing. I took three history classes with Dr. Barger at Long Beach City College, two U.S. History and a newly formed African American History class back in the late sixtes. Of all my undergraduate and graduate classes, Dr. Barger was one of the very best. He was a most engaging teacher and very passionate about history. He knew all of his students and we remember him well. I am teacher of history now and I know that I love teaching history because I had an exemplary teacher so many years ago.

I am very sad to hear of his passing. I had Dr. Barger for history at Long Beach City College in the early 70's. He always talked about living in Garden Grove, his son being a better baseball pitcher than Bert Blyleven and if one spit on the ground in Garden Grove, the streets flooded. I have very little fond memories of college professors, but I will always remember Dr. Barger
