Dennis Keizer
Dennis Keizer

1926 - 2013

Born in Winona, MN in 1926, Dennis moved with his family to Hawaii in January 1940. Dennis was a 15 year old living across the street from Hickam Field on December 7, 1941. Fortunately, he recently preserved the story of those years for his grandchildren.

Dennis' first 30 year career was as a teacher, vice principal and principal in the Long Beach Unified School District. Although he worked at several elementary schools, his favorite assignment was planning, staffing and opening the state-of-the-art Hudson Elementary School where he served as principal from 1969-1976.

After retiring from LBUSD in 1983, Dennis had a second career for the next 24 years selling financial products primarily to educators. During this time, he also was able to exercise his passion for golf, both with long time friends and the new friends he made at the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach.

In 2007, at age 80, Dennis announced he was ready to retire (again). He and Martha, his wife of 36 years, sold their business and moved to Las Vegas where they spent the next 5 years traveling, hosting CA friends and learning to cope with the increasingly debilitating affects of severe asbestosis acquired in the Navy.

Dennis is survived by his devoted wife, Martha; son, Dennis (Jill); daughter Denine Kelly (Chris); brother, Jim (Deborah); sister, Cathy Ostoich (Richard) and grandchildren Kathryn, Dennis, Cara and Julia.

At Dennis' request services will be private. You are invited to visit his memorial page at: http://dennisrkeizer.com and sign the guest book at www.presstelegram.com/obituaries.

Dennis was my first principal when I started teaching in 1970. He set the bar very high for the other principals to come. I learned so much from him and enjoyed his mentorship and friendship. It was a great pleasure to see him and Martha at the Hudson reunion in Las Vegas a few years ago. He will hold a very special place in my heart.

What a wonderful memorial for a wonderful man. I was lucky enough to be on the staff at Hudson when the school opened. We really did have a great time but certainly worked hard too. I was lucky to reconnect with Dennis and Martha when they moved to Las Vegas and cherish these new memories too.

I have wonderful memories of Dennis as a mentor and a colleague. He shared his wisdom with me as a mom of twins who attended Kettering when he was principal there and as a colleague when I was a new principal in LBUSD. I will always treasure those memories. He was a remarkable man who lived a remarkable life.
My sincere condolences to Martha and his family.

Dennis will forever be in the hearts of so many of us. We shared the love of kids, learning, and life. He attracted and expected the best. It was an honor to be on his staff and his friend.
