January 4, 1952 - May 31, 2021 Keith Roderick "Rod" Carey, Jr., 69, passed away on May 31, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born on January 4, 1952 in San Francisco to Keith Sr. and Marilyn Griffin Carey. Rod was the oldest of 3 siblings. The family lived in Visalia CA until Rod was 11, when they moved to Long Beach. Rod graduated from Long Beach Poly High School in 1970. There he was involved in student government and sports. He was football team quarterback and pitcher on the baseball team. He was also member of Comus Club. Rod was a proud Jackrabbit and had very fond memories of his Poly years. Rod served on the reunion committees of all his class reunions beginning with the 10th and continuing until the 50th. After high school, Rod attended the University of Arizona for two years, transferring to UCLA where he graduated in 1975 with a degree in Business Economics. He was very active in fraternal life as a member of Sigma Nu at both universities. Rod was always a big fan of anything Bruin, especially football and basketball. He fondly remembered the glory years of UCLA basketball when as a student he was able to watch Coach John Wooden and the team practice in the Men's Gym. Rod worked with his father in the family accounting practice, and then had his own firm after his father retired. He took great pride in serving his clients. Rod was active in the community for many years as a member of the Costa Mesa Rotary, where he served in many positions including President from 1988 to 1989. Rod married Carolyn Andriesse in 1991. They went to junior high and high school together and reconnected at their 20 year high school reunion (after being set up by good friends). Their son, Scott, was born in 1993. Among their many family vacations, Rod, Carolyn and Scott attended UCLA Bruin Woods family camp for 24 years. Rod followed Coach Wooden's advice and always made "friendship a fine art". Rod was blessed with many friends. In fact one person described him as someone who had a "PHD in friendship". He frequently reached out to and stayed in contact with friends from childhood, high school, college and into his later life. Rod is survived by Carolyn, his wife of 30 years; son, Scott; brother, Bruce Carey (Debra); sister, Virginia Barmeyer; and several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held in July.
