Laura McKee Obituary

Laura McKee

Laura McKee, the first child of Mark and Mildred Landrum, was born in San Francisco in 1924 and raised in Plymouth, California. Her two younger brothers were developmentally disabled and epileptic. The small town atmosphere turned out to be a watchful and caring environment for her family. These times shaped Laura's life as she always knew first hand that the cards aren't always dealt fairly. She worked hard at everything she did. After getting married to Kenneth Charles McKee, she rode her bike to Long Beach State University from the family's new home in the Los Altos area to earn her degree. The next phase of her life was her signature moment. She taught 5th grade at Carver Elementary school where she touched the lives of every student who was in her class. Countless students in their 50's and 60's yould recount to her children about Mrs. McKee and the impact she had on their lives. Laura and Ken had 2 children, Mark and Ann. Laura retired from teaching in 1968 to raise her daughter. When she imparted her lessons of life to her daughter, she went back to work. She was a no-nonsense, old school worker. She ended her career working for Boeing. During her retirement years she loved gardening and her roses. She also was a wonderful "Grandma Kee" to her 3 grandchildren whose favorite memories include being fed ice cream for breakfast. Laura spent her final few years in the loving arms of Quaker Gardens, where she and Ken touched many people. She was also cared for by the wonderful clergy and members of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Garden Grove. Laura leaves her children, son, Mark and daughter, Ann; son-in-law, Derek; grandchildren, Kai Leigh, Jesse and Devin; nephews, John, Gary and Michael and their families; niece, Suzy and one very special niece, Sharon and her family. Mom's life will be memorialized at the First Presbyterian Church of Garden Grove at 10:30 Saturday, October 12th. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mom's memory may be made to the church, 11832 Euclid St. Garden Grove, CA 92840 or Quaker Gardens 12151 Dale St. Stanton, CA 90680. Ken and Laura are greatly missed by their church family, Grace First Presbyterean Church of Long Beach. They were members here for more than 30 years, until health issues required them to move to Quaker Gardens for assistance. They were active in many ways and are missed by many.

Mrs. McKee was my fifth grade teacher in 1961-1962, and she is probably the reason I became a teacher myself. My fondest memories of her class include making bonnets to wear on our trek across the country and building covered wagons. She was an amazing teacher!

Laura McKee was my fifth grade teacher at Carver way back in 1963/1964 and remains to this day my favorite teacher of all time. We had a huge class of near 40 students, but she managed to do such amazing things with our class, without the benefit of any classroom aides. I loved her so much that I named my daughter Laura after her. My thoughts are with her family.

Everyone wanted to be in Mrs. McKee's room. I was so very happy to be one of the lucky ones. Unfortunately for our class, that was the year she had her daughter . There were lots of tears the day she made the announcement that it was her last day. She also lovingly mentioned her son who was in the military at the time ( if I remember correctly). Our classrooms loss was her families gain. Blessings to you all.

My aunt was one in a million. We just seemed to click. I will miss our visits together.
Love you,
