Sam Stein Obituary

Sam Sol Stein

November 16, 1914 - July 9, 2012

Sam Stein passed away peacefully on July 9, 2012 at the age of 97. Sam was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, received his High School Diploma then joined the Army. He married Jessie Katchkey from Sheboygan in 1941 and moved to the Long Beach area in 1945 to pursue his dreams. Sam and Jessie were married for 75 years before Jessie passed away on December 7, 2006 at age 89. Sam and Jessie owned Bayshore Fish & Poultry Market on 2nd St in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach during the 1950's until 1975. They were well known, well liked and respected in the community. After his retirement as business owner, Sam worked at Market Basket and earned the Seafood Excellence Award in 1980. Sam was active at Temple Beth Zion-Sinai and was the Men's Club Man of the Year for his years of dedicated volunteering. He also volunteered in the community at Food Finders as delivery driver, with the Retired Veterans raising funds by selling poppies and delivering magazines to patients at Veterans Hospital in Long Beach. Sam was also a 50 year member of the Scottish Rite attending the Los Cerritos Lodge. During his life Sam was an avid daily walker and enjoyed bowling and going to Las Vegas with friends. He loved to help people, volunteer, entertain friends and neighbors, and provide for his family. He got great joy when he could spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sam taught his two sons the value of hard work, managing finances, practicing ethical business principals, and following the Golden Rule. His advice worked as both his sons were successful in their careers. Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie; his parents, Morris and Reva Stein; his two brothers, George and Herman "Hervie" Stein and one sister, Betty Zimmerman. He is survived by his two sons, Marshall (wife Toni) Stein and Robert Stein; his grandsons, Jeff (wife Martha), Sean, and Jeremy; granddaughters, Rachel Watkins (husband Steven) and Sara Torres (husband Joe Torres); great granddaughters, Brittany, Elizabeth and Kristen Watkins; nieces and nephews: Lynn and Erwin Feldman, Sheldon and June Zimmerman, Bob and Diane Zimmerman, Randy Stein, and Barry Stein. Sam lived a long life and even though we will miss him, we know he is in a better place-so we rejoice. His memory and lessons of life will be in our hearts and minds for generations to come. He accomplished his goal of being a good husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Please sign the guest book at www.presstelegram.com/obituaries.

In ways big and small, Sam's life changed our world and left it a better place, and touched too many hearts to ever be forgotten.

May you find comfort in knowing that many people share your sadness.

We will always remember him for his kindness and loving spirit.

Bobby and Marshall;
I think you both know how much we loved Sam and what a special bond he and Jessie shared with my mom. We were so blessed to have such wonderful neighbors when we moved to our home over 12 years ago. When mom was able she loved to cook and bake and share it with them. While Jessie was here she would always make sure Sam drove my mom to the local stores any time she wanted to go. He was always there for her even after Jessie died. Every day Sam would come over to watch Price is Right with mom. We loved having him over for our family events because he was such a part of our family. He was such a wonderful man and so easy to love - we will miss him so much. We know that he is at peace now and that brings us comfort.

Though I did not have the privilege of knowing Mr. Stein, he seemed to have lived a long and full life. His story brought to mind an approprate scripture I'am sure he would have appreciated at Ecclesiastes 7:1... "A name is better than good oil, and the day of death than the day of one's being born." What a wonderful legacy he has left for his family. My prayers are with you.

I want to send this message to my, long ago high school friend, Marshall. Marshall, I have such vivid memories of your father and mother. They were wonderful people. I still live in Belmont Shore and hardly a day goes by that I don't walk by the Bank of America where years ago your folks had their business. I hope all is well with you.
