Virginia Tobin Obituary

Virginia Lyons Tobin (87) Died May 24, 2009, in the Los Angeles home she shared with her son, Tim and her daughter-in-law, Donna Dees. Born in August of 1921 in Anaheim, California, she was the youngest of three, both of whom preceded her in death. She moved often as a little girl, as she followed her father who was a wildcatt er in the California oilfields. Settling in Long Beach, she attended Poly High School, Long Beach City College and graduated from Pomona College. She married Robert Bruce "Bud" Heimerdinger, who was killed in the Philippines during World War II. After the war, she married Jack Tobin, the noted sportswriter and investigative reporter. They moved to Los Angeles in 1951. She taught school, worked for The Broadway and later was Jack's bookkeeper. She was a former President of the Westchester Woman's Club and on the Scholarship Committee for Westchester High School. After Jack's death in 1996, she lived with Donna and Tim. She died peacefully in her own bed with them at her side. That's the best anyone can hope for as we quit this life. In addition to Donna and Tim, she is survived by 5 nieces and nephews and their children. At her request, there will be no funeral, nor memorial. Donations can be made in her memory to: Virginia Lyons and John G. "Jack" Tobin Memorial Scholarship Fund, Long Beach City College Found ation, 4901 E. Carson Street, Long Beach, CA 90808, (562) 938-4634.
