Charles Jefferson Obituary

Charles Robert Jefferson Sr. of Organ, New Mexico left this world for another on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at La Posada Hospice with his eldest daughter and son holding his hands.
Mr. Jefferson was born in Beltona, Alabama on April 16, 1928. He was the third child of seven born to Ella and William T. Jefferson. Mr Jefferson went to work for AT&T Phone Co at a young age and traveled with the crew that installed telephone lines across the country. While working in Swainsboro, Georgia he met what he said was "the prettiest girl in the whole south" and quickly married her. He and Billie Sue Stephens brought five children into this world and raised them well.
From AT&T, Mr. Jefferson went to work for Civil Service in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. He resided there with his family for seven years and was active with his church and the Masonic Lodge. In 1958 he transfered to White Sands Proving Grounds, New Mexico, where he helped establish not only the communications systems, but plant trees that line the streets at White Sands Missile Range today.
In 1973 he met the second love of his life, ReNon Waldrop Jefferson. They were married November 15, 1975 and though they had no children together ReNon became stepmother to five "mostly grown" children. ReNon predeceased Jeff, as he was known, in April of 2000 and left a hole in his life that he never filled.
Mr. Jefferson retired from White Sands Missile Range in 1983 as an Engineer for USACC, the communications command on post. He spent his retirement managing his properties and giving to his friends and neighbors. He was well loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Mr. Jefferson is survived by all five of his children, Delores Jefferson-Hale, Charles Robert Jefferson Jr., William Stephen Jefferson, Michael Paul Jefferson, and Patricia Lynn Jefferson-Doughty, his sister Ana Isabell Tombrello, brothers Cecil, Bill, Neil, Don and Horace Jefferson. Also carrying on his legacy are 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Jefferson was preceded in death by his wife, ReNon Jefferson, his mother and father Rosa Ella and William T. Jefferson, an infant brother James David, son-in-law Eldon "Huck" Hale and granddaughter Mary G. Hale.
A visitation will be held at La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home on Sunday, November 11, 2007 from 6 pm - 8 pm. Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Monday, November 12, 2007 at La Paz - Graham's Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Slumbering Mountain Cemetery in Organ, New Mexico. Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home, 555 W. Amador, 526-6891. To sign guest book and to send condolences log on to www.lapaz-grahams.com.

I will always think of my uncle Bob as one of my heros. Uncle Bob was the full spectrum of a man. He was my example of the free spirit and hell raiser in the family, he was brilliant and could do anything he set his mind to. He knew that being fair was important, and his generosity came naturally from a good heart filled with contradictions.
His passing creates a palpable loss even to those who lived far away from him because he had a far reaching spark of wonderment and curiosity that was always fresh and thinking of him always brought a smile: “I wonder what Uncle Bob is up to these days, what new project or trip is he scheming about“, I would ask myself. Thinking of him will always bring a smile, and pride that we share a bit of DNA. I hope I can find that DNA in myself when I need strength to accomplish, or the freedom to raise hell. Most of all that- when I am raising hell, I will be thinking of my Uncle Bob.

Bob was loved by many here in Alabama. He was always upbeat no matter what his health conditions were. My mother loved him so much that she named her only daughter Bobbie. Here in Ala. he was known as Bobby Jefferson. I especially, will never forget him. I love you Bob!!!
