Jenny Lee Merta

Las Cruces - JENNY LEE (GUREY) MERTA, a resident of Las Cruces since 1989 passed away from natural causes on Friday, May 7, 2021 at her family business in Las Cruces. Jenny as she was fondly known to family and friends was born December 16, 1976 in Redwood City, California, and while growing up lived on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona, Guam, Safford, AZ. and Lincoln, NE., before making Las Cruces her home. Jenny graduated from Onate High School and then obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice at New Mexico State University. While attending college, Jenny worked as a waitress and then bartender in such local establishments as El Patio, Gadsden Purchase, and Encanto (formerly the Hilton).

Jenny briefly lived in Tempe, AZ. San Diego, CA., and Cuernavaca, Mexico—where she studied Spanish. She also traveled to such places as Italy, Puerto Vallarta and Puerto Penasco, Mexico, and her maternal ancestral home of Yap State in the Federated States of Micronesia. Favorite pastimes of Jenny's were interior design, reading literature, and boating at nearby Elephant Butte Lake. Jenny took special pride in the raising of her two sons, Matthew James Bernard (age 7) and Max John Bernard (age 4), and in helping her husband Cliff Bernard start up and manage their business—Bernard Automotive.

Jenny's gaiety, wit, generosity, sweetness, and beauty will be greatly missed by family and friends. As husband Cliff was fond of saying, "Jenny's undeniably beautiful and contagious smile really did have a way of lighting up a room." Jenny Lee was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents and numerous uncles and aunts.

She leaves behind her husband—Cliff Bernard, her two sons Matt and Max; her parents Mary Agnes Gupin Merta and Rod Merta; her aunt and godmother Laurie Aknin; two sisters Jackie Lee Sierra and husband Jacob and Tami Jane Sutter and husband Jon; her parents-in-law, Rita and Jim Bernard; her nephews David Barker and wife Monika Gomez, Jacob and James Sierra, and many other family members on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.

At her request cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will begin at 11 AM Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Las Cruces First Assembly of God, 5605 Bataan Memorial West, Las Cruces with Pastor James Gildon officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be held at a later date.

I met Rod Merta in Lincoln NE in the 1980s, Rod ran a program that matched foreign students with Americans students (me). I still remember what a phenomenal family the Mertas were, and I feel great sorrow at their loss.
