Peter Maud Obituary

Peter J. Maud, Ph.D., F.A.C.S.M., was born on 8 August, 1938, in Bolton, Lancashire, England, the son of G.H.H. (Harry) and Connie Maud. Subsequently he was raised in Arnside, Westmorland, prior to entry into the Royal Navy to fulfill his two year required National Service obligation. He was a member of the 1957 Portsmouth Command Field gun Crew and completed his service stationed for his final year on HMS Afrikaander, a shore base in Capetown, South Africa. He then attended Loughborough and Chester Colleges, England, to obtain certification as a teacher of physical education. His wanderlust first took him to Montreal, Canada, for his first Professional appointment. This was followed by a year at a grammar school in Bradford, England, and then two years teaching in Sydney, Australia. Wanting to further promote his educational endeavors, he received a scholarship to attend the University of Oregon, USA, where he completed an undergraduate degree. He subsequently attended the University of New Mexico to complete his MS and Ph.D. degrees with a major emphasis in exercise physiology. His wandering spirit is best documented by the number of professional appointments that he held; Tulane University, New Orleans, Central Michigan University, S.U.N.Y, Brockport, NY, Columbus College, Georgia, Eastern Washington University, Cheney, Eastern Montana College, Billings, University of Texas, El Paso, Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, and finally ended his professional career as Head of the Human Performance, Dance and Recreation Department (now Department of Kinesiology ) at New Mexico State University. His original interest had been in teaching and research in exercise physiology (honored by being awarded Fellow status in the ACSM), but towards the end of his career was primarily, in what he describes as pseudo administration, Department Head or Chair.
Peter believed in practicing what he preached, and was an avid sport and exercise participant, playing rugby for 36 years, squash, racquetball, badminton and competed in many triathlons (completed the Hawaii Ironman Trialthlon in 1986).
He is preceded in death by his former wife Stephanie Ellender, Houma, Louisiana (mother of his two children), and survived by his wife of 23 years, Grace. He is also survived by his brother Philip, Arnside, England, Philip's wife Margaret and their two children Mark and Kate; his son Philip, Tulsa, OK, his wife Jill and three grandchildren, Peter, Harry and Caroline; his daughter Hailey, husband Blair, Katy, TX, and Blair's daughter Kaitlyn; and stepchildren Jerry Gipson, Jonathan Gipson and Nancy Gipson Wielgus and their families.
At his request, he was buried at sea.

This man was truly a great man in every sense of the word. He treated everyone he met with respect and was kind, so kind. I will miss his visits into our office in Las Cruces. A very memorable man. Full of life and love for rugby and an alarm clock. Someone I will never forget and count myself very fortunate to have met. My deepest condolences to those left behind who loved him and knew him better than I did. What a great man.
