Refugio Gonzales Obituary

Refugio "Cuco" Gonzales, 84, longtime Deming resident presently living in Belen passed away Saturday, November 15, 2008 in Belen.
Visitation will be today, November 19th, beginning at 4 o'clock in the afternoon at Baca's Funeral Chapel with a prayer vigil to follow at 7 o'clock led by Deacon Joshe Duplissey. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated tomorrow, Thursday, November 20, at 10 o'clock in the morning at St. Ann's Catholic Church with Father Virgilio Flores officiating. Concluding services and internment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery with veteran honors accorded.
"Cuco" was born on July 4, 1924 in Deming to Gil Gonzales and Fabiana Altamirano. He was a WWII Army veteran, having served most of his military career in the Philippines. On November 21, 1942 he married Rebecca Gonzales in Las Cruces. Cuco had worked for El Paso Natural Gas before going to carpentry school and having worked as a carpenter the rest of his working life. He was a communicant at St. Ann's Catholic Church and the last six years of his life he had lived in Belen with his daughter Terry.
Survivors include 2 daughters; Irma Marrufo and husband, Gilbert of Hacienda Heights, CA; Terry Renteria and husband, David of Belen; 5 grandchildren; Denise Marrufo and husband Craig Hamm; Tracy Marrufo, Teresa Marrufo, David Renteria and Letisha Garcia and husband Pete; 5 great-grandchildren; Jordan Wayans, Ryan Garcia, Kodie Garcia, Hunter Garcia and Dallas Ocegueda; 3 brothers; Nel, Willie and Lencho Gonzales and their families of CA.
Cuco was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rebecca Gonzales, brothers, Netchi Gonzales, Arturito Altamirano, Rosalio "Charlie" Gonzales; sisters, Ramona Griego, Lecha Torres and Julia Urquides.
Great gratitude to his caretaker and friend of 3 years, Gloria Rael, special thanks to Mike and Mary Merrill; Sam Baca of Baca's Funeral Chapels; the staff of Amber Care and to all that helped us.
Serving as pallbearers will be David Renteria, Pete Garcia, David Renteria Jr., Henry Gallegos Jr., Raul Granillo and Willie Gonzales. Honorary bearers are Beto Tarango, Ruben Gallegos, Carlos Herrera, Eddie Mesa and Tacho Romero.
