George Daniel Witman, 90, passed peacefully to his heavenly home on Thursday, June 2, 2016.
George was born August 2, 1925 to the late Daniel Adam Witman and Rosie Becker Witman of Lebanon County, where he grew up on his parent's farm.
He was of the Lutheran and Methodist faith.
He graduated from Newmanstown High School in Newmanstown in 1943 and before being called to serve his country he worked as a Melangeur machine operator, rolling the chocolate mixture for the Hershey Chocolate Corporation. During World War II he served as a radio operator in the 775th Army Air Force Unit at the rank of Corporal and received the World War II Victory medal. After the military, he pursued his higher education at DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago, Ill. where he received his Associates in Applied Science Degree. This lead him on a long career in the technology and aeronautical fields. His work with General Dynamics F-111 simulators and pilots was one of the highlights of his career which also included a thirty plus year career with the Naval Air Station Atlanta in Training Devices where he retired in 2004 at the age of 79. One of his greatest loves was flying and aircraft and he obtained his private pilot's license and would fly anytime he could.
His next greatest love was to travel and explore the different states he would be based in by going on weekend excursions with his family. In his later years, he would travel to his beloved Daytona Beach during May and November with his longtime companion, Millie, with a sure stop for his favorite meal of shrimp in St. Augustine, Florida on the agenda. His kind and generous heart along with his pearls of wisdom will be greatly missed.
George leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Cindee Epperson and son-in-law, Matt Epperson; his longtime companion, Millie McClung; and a host of family and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home Chapel in Marietta with the Rev. Ted McClung officiating. Family will receive friends 1 to 2 p.m., Monday, prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be Thursday at Schaefferstown Cemetery Corp., 108 Church St., Newmanstown, PA 17073.
