Anne Carmel Murray
05/26/1938 - 07/11/2025
Anne Carmel Murray passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025, at age 87, due to complications from pneumonia.
Born on May 26, 1938 in County Donegal, Ireland to Joe and Kathleen McHugh, she was raised with her four sisters and brother, first in Mallymore and later down the road in Milford. She always spoke fondly of good times with family and friends from her childhood.
At 15 years old she went to nursing school in Manchester, England where she worked as a midwife. In 1963 she took a nursing position in Chicago before moving to San Francisco. She quickly found many new friends in San Francisco's Irish community, and met fellow Donegal native Danny Murray.
Carmel and Danny were married in 1967 and soon had three children. In 1972 they moved to Burlingame. A working mother, she spent the next 30+ years as an emergency room nurse on the midnight shift at Seton Medical Center in Daly City. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She was heavily involved in her children's sports activities, including coaching youth soccer teams and being a founding member of the Cailini Saoirse GAA Club. She loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports, and she traveled the world to do so.
She also loved the traditional Christmas parties with the Friels and Boyles where good friends became family. She was often reading a good book, solving a crossword puzzle, enjoying a game show or participating in pub trivia at Dicey's. She was a sports fanatic who supported the Raiders and Donegal GAA (Up Donegal!). One of her favorite destinations was Reno with Mary Cappa for some bingo, slots and cards. No sleep needed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Danny; her parents: Joe and Kathleen McHugh; and by her sister Kay Logue. She is survived by her children: Cathal, Kevin and Kathleen (Kevin O'Shea); her beloved grandsons: Danny and Conor O'Shea; her siblings: Benny, Vera, Josephine and Seamus; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, in the US, Ireland, Canada, and Australia.
Carmel (aka Mello) was a welcoming host and matriarchal figure for decades. Her home was open to all and the kettle was always on. She formed deep and lasting friendships with people across many different generations. She provided assistance, guidance, advice and wasn't afraid to provide some much needed truth. She was a real straight shooter. She gave expert advice with a cigarette in one hand and a wee drink close by. Her wit, wisdom, hospitality, and legendary character will be dearly missed.
Good night. God bless. We love you.
