Eugene Berkowitz Obituary

Eugene Joseph Berkowitz
Eugene Joseph Berkowitz, 93, of Norwalk, Connecticut, and husband of Nancy Berkowitz, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at The Carolton Convalescent Home in Fairfield, Connecticut. Born May 8, 1931, in the Bronx, New York, he was the son of David and Pearl Berkowitz, both immigrants to the US from Romania.
Mr. Berkowitz attended trade school in the Bronx, while working at Berk's Luncheonette, his family's restaurant. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He proudly served The City of New York as a police officer for 23 years. During his tenure there, he worked in both the Investigations Unit and Communications Division. He was a dispatcher for the NYPD and was instrumental in showcasing the 911 emergency system when it was initiated at One Police Plaza in New York City. After retiring from the NYPD, he went to work for The City of Peekskill Police Department, where he served as a Community Service Officer in charge of the Records Department, until fully retiring in 1990, after six years of service.
After relocating from Cortlandt Manor, NY to Norwalk, CT, Eugene served as President of the Condominium Association of Mallard's Landing, where he was an active and well-loved member of the community.
Eugene was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all who knew him. He had a genuinely kind and generous heart. He was a lifelong fan of Elvis Presley, as well as his favorite sports teams, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs. His kind green eyes, warm smile and infectious laugh will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He was one of a kind, and often referred to as "The Greatest."
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Berkowitz of Norwalk, CT, daughters, Jeannine and her husband Bruce Weed of Danbury, CT, and Jennifer Berkowitz Wieland of Ridgefield, CT; 3 grandchildren, Jonathan Wieland of Southbury, Olivia Wieland of Ridgefield, and Shelby Weed of Danbury. He is also survived by his brothers, Jerry (Annette) Berkowitz of Laguna Woods, CA, and Murray (Riva) Berkowitz of West Palm Beach, FL. He was predeceased by the remaining Berkowitz brothers, Norman, Larry and Sy.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 15, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, with funeral services beginning at 1:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. Interment with military honors will follow in Independent Hebrew Society/Temple Shalom Cemetery, Richards Avenue, Norwalk, CT. Donations in his name may be made to: the NYPD Shomrim Society, the official organization of Jewish members of the NYPD.
