Ronald Myhers
February 8, 1936 - August 22, 2025
Ronald Ingwald Myhers, 89, of Strum WI completed his earthly journey on Friday, August 22, 2025 at Augusta Silverleaf in Augusta WI being surrounded by his loved ones. Ron was born February 8, 1936 in Eau Claire WI; to Ingwald and Ruth (Rommundstad) Myhers. He was joined by 2 sisters Kathleen Rae, and Cherisma Ellen on their home farm softly nestled under the Viking Knoll ski jump which was once part of their grandfather's land. What wonderful memories they had together on the farm, gathering their own families together and reuniting there for 50+ years.
Ron graduated from Eleva-Strum High School in 1954, where he met his future bride-to-be Charlotte through his sister Kay. Passing up a college scholarship to play baseball at Winona State, he stayed on the farm to help his parents, worked at Robbe's Store in Strum, and played local baseball until drafted by the Milwaukee Braves in 1958. While in spring training honing his pitching repertoire which centered around his blazing fastball to his favorite catcher Bob Uecker, Uncle Sam tapped him on the shoulder and he was drafted into the US Army. After completion of basic training in Colorado
Springs, he was assigned to be stationed in Tokyo Japan where he continued his baseball career and fulfilled his "desk job" of protecting and delivering classified documents.
Upon his honorable discharge he returned to the farm, and decided it was time to marry/"rescue" Char and on June 16,1961 they were married at Trinity of Norden Church in Mondovi. Hence, they purchased the home farm from Ron's parents and lived there until 1997. Their daughter Bonita "Bonnie" Rochelle was delivered to their family in May of 1962.
With Char teaching 5th and 6th graders, Ron continued milking cows and farming until 1966 when he went to work at National Presto Industries in Eau Claire. This allowed the beginning of their beef cattle herd which they enjoyed tending to for years. At Presto he was a foreman on the rough end inspection line for 12 years watching production of 350 million 4- and 8-inch shells. There he met lifelong friends and always loved seeing any of the "old crew" and the chance to reminisce a good story. It seemed everyone had a nickname, and his buddy "Schnauzer" crowned him "Rotten Ronnie" one afternoon
while cutting wood on the farm within ear shot of Bonnie. That's all she needed to hear, and it stuck. Once Presto's production of ammunition was over, he went to work for Chicago Bridge and Iron. Eventually leaving CBI, he ventured back into the agriculture industry working for the Farm Supply Corporation based out of Eau Claire as their crop and chemical specialist, as well as Kaltenberg Seed Company of Waunakee, WI, retiring in 1993 after returning to the FS.
Ronnie was a charter member of the E-S Lions club and had the privilege of serving as District Governor in 1993 where he and Char met hundreds of wonderful people. He was extremely proud of all of the clubs and their projects, and was humbled by the help of mobility provided to him and Char in their later years of a handicap ramp.
His love for the outdoors began from the time he could carry a shot gun or rifle. Rotten was blessed to have hunted big game out west and in Alaska, numerous times. Most memorable was a hunting expedition in 1980 when he and 3 buddies were left stranded in the wilderness of Alaska by their outfitter. Wonderful hours fishing in Canada with the FS boys in "The Bull Boat", and a trip with Godson Arick produced incomputable memories. He and Char had the pleasure of fishing twice on the Kenai Peninsula, during trips to Alaska. Taking his grandson Matt prairie dog and pheasant hunting in SD were some of his most prized hunts. The Wissota Hunting Lodge and the Hawkins Hilton drew him up to northern WI in Nov. for the camaraderie of cards, great food, and even to hunt!
His desire to own The Beverage Mart in Strum became reality in 1983. Technology was not his forte, so running the cash register was out of the question. But Rotten was adept at bagging items, stocking the beer cooler, and toting purchases out for customers, telling stories every step of the way. Promoting the annual Big Buck contest which offered a head and shoulder mount fueled the excitement and anticipation of rifle season.
After selling the home farm, Charlotte and Ron spent 22 winters in Arizona. The number of people they met over that time was infinite. It seemed everywhere they went, they knew someone or were recognized. Hospitality was important until the end of his life.
From changing water for 4 days on the lutefisk prior to the epic family Christmases on the farm, to hosting and cooking for visiting families of friends in their California room in AZ, or demanding Adam and Mary be taken to dinner 36 hours before his passing, folks needed to be fed and entertained plain and simple.
Quietly, but firmly he walked with faith. He served as a Trustee for many years at Immanuel Lutheran in Strum, and in AZ he and Char were instrumental in starting an after-school program where he oversaw meal preparation for the children. His big booming "God voice" while reading scripture was mesmerizing. His biggest blessings and delights were his grandson Matt and great granddaughters Carmen and Kyli. How he loved every minute of time spent with those 3!
He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Bonnie Myhers ( Dan Kantos); grandson, Matthew Kunes; two great-grand daughters, Carmen and Kyli; sisters Kay Hendrickson-Harsh, Cherry Larson (Ron Hoeppner); brother-in-law, Marvin "John" Fossum (Julie Nollenberg); and sister-in-law, Dianne Fossum; Niece's, Beth Peterson (Mike), and Sonja Linman (Whitney); Nephew's, Godson Arick (Anne) Hendrickson, Mark (Becky) Larson, John "Casey" (Jeni) Fossum, Godson Andrew "Joe" (Krystal) Fossum, 12 great nieces and nephews and one great-great niece, along with multiple cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bonita "Charlotte", parents, Ingwald and Ruth Myhers, parents-in-law, Marvin and Florence Fossum; brother in laws; Reverend Larry Hendrickson, John Harsh, Ken Steube, and Roger Larson, and former son-in-law David Kunes.
A special thank you to Kendra Skinner ("Mother Superior") and her team at Augusta Silverleaf for their loving care, compassion, and support of Ronnie since he became a resident at the facility. He loved each and every one of you; Christina, Kati, Karen, Natalie, Angie, Montana, Tracy, Shengy, Jenna, Amanda, and RN Mary.
We would like to acknowledge and thank St. Croix Hospice for the great job they did for Ron tending to him, and supporting him the last few months, especially RN's Karyn and Erica, Aide Nancy, Massage Therapist Allison, Music Therapist Sarah, Chaplain Karl, and Dr. Reesman.
Mary Barneson, words cannot be crafted to thank you for the support you provide to so many, but especially to Ronnie and Charlotte. Your beautiful face and voice were the last Char opened her eyes for, and Rotten wanted and knew he needed to see his Mary, and Adam, one last time because you have always "calmed him down". Thank you, dear Mary, for being such a blessing to them.
We are grateful for the many friends and family that have taken the time to visit Ron and Char, called them, and sent cards over the years. Those generous acts delivered such joy.
A joint Celebration of Life for both Ron and Charlotte will be held on Saturday, September 13th , 2025, at 12:30 pm with visitation starting at 9 am at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Strum WI. Live stream of the service = immanuelstrum.org
