I worked with Alex at the Civilian Personnel Office, Ft. Benning, GA. When he became supervisor (in our all-women office), we all bonded quickly and fondly renamed him 'Alexis'. That's how I will always remember him. Please accept my condolences during your time of sorrow.

I did not know Mr. Van Heuvel but I was so moved by his obituary. I too am an animal lover and it saddens me when I hear of the loss of another friend of animals. He sounds like a wonderful man. Please accept my deepest condolences to the family at this very sad time.

My most sincere sympathy for your loss. I feel so blessed to have known Alex for so many years. He has been such a help to me at the farm and was always there when he was needed. His involvement with the farm over these many years will always be remembered by so many of the volunteers. He has certainly made a difference in my life. Mrs. Van Heuvel & family,
I generally saw Alex only once a year, when he brought the SAD class to Washington, although we spoke by phone a few times a year. My staff and I were all extremely fond of Alex, he was absolutely delightful to work with, and you knew just by his voice and demeanor that he was a good, kind person. I'm truly saddened by his passing, and wish I had gotten to know him better.

I worked with Alex in the Fort Benning Civilian Personnel Office. He was one of my mentors when I entered the Classification program. He was a consummate professional. We became fast friends and
co-workers. I remember how much he talked about and loved his family. Alex will truly be missed by all who knew him. My prayers are with you Julie, little Alex and Sydney.

Julie and Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of need. Alex was a great person. I am glad for the opportunity to have worked with him at Fort Benning. I'm even more grateful for getting to know him better as we later shared a ride back and forth to Atlanta each week. Many of his conversations during the long rides centered around his family, whom he loved so much. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Dearest Julia, Alex Jr. and Sydney, there are no words to tell you how very sorry I am for the loss of Alex. In the very short time that I knew him and spent time volunteering with him at Begin Again Farms, I came to know an extremely loving, caring and very giving man. I thoroughly enjoyed every encounter I had with him and came to look upon him as a personal friend! You could always count on Alex for anything and that was such a comfort over these past couple of months as we planned for and carried out the National Rescue Ride this past October which greatly benefited an organization and cause I know was very dear to Alex's heart! He was a cornerstone to the success we experienced with that fundraiser and to the success that the farm is experiencing to this day! He truly did light up a room and a barn whenever he was around and I know my life is much brighter and better for having known him and had the pleasure of working alongside him! Thank you, Julia, Alex Jr. and Sydney for sharing your beloved Alex with us! Please know that we are here for all of you, as Alex was always here for all of us! Heaven became a little brighter when Alex walked through those gates this weekend.
I will remember Alex for the wonderful man he was; the leader, the mentor, the friend. The way he tilted his head and the twinkle in his eyes when he smiled that Alex smile.
But what I'll remember most was the love and pride that just filled the room when he showed you a picture of or told you about his beloved Julie and Sydney!
Your grief is profound. Trust in God, let Him guide you through this time of sorrow, and know that one day you will be reunited.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Alex through the 2008 LDP program. He was not only a great friend but a great mentor. He was outgoing, professional, helpful and always a leader. Alex would always talk to me about the good ole days in the military and his love to be around soldiers and family. I'm a graduate of the 03 LDP class and I worked with Alex at SAD. He was a great friend and a wonderful human being. Alex touched many folks through the LDP program and his spirit will live in our hearts for many years to come. Alex and I shared a great love of animals and we often talked about animal rescue activities. In fact, the last conversation I had with Alex was about his fundraising ride to benefit farm animal rescue. He talked about the many animals that he and your family rescued. The animals too have lost a great hero and friend in Alex's passing.

Alex was a wonderful man who impacted so many lives in a positive way. His personal touch on my life remains vivid to this day. Over dinner at one of his favorite hot and spicy Tai restaurants, he regaled me with story after story of his many life long adventures. The twinkle in those eyes, that grin upon his face, and the laughter in his voice remain a special memory to this day. I will miss him.

I worked with Alex on several of his programs here in Columbus/Ft. Benning. He was a wonderful person to work with - and in my limited time around Alex it was evident that he loved his family and adored his grand daughter.
