Alfred Marchand Obituary

Alfred G. Marchand had been a flight attendant less than a year when he worked United Airlines Flight 175 on Tuesday. At 44, he had just retired from his first career--as a police officer.

After working his way up the ranks to lieutenant over 21 years with his hometown police department in New Mexico, Marchand was making vacation reservations when he happened upon a job posting for flight attendants late last year, his wife's best friend said.

On a whim, he signed up, said Connie Lane. "He just decided to do something really different. It really surprised us."

As it turned out, he loved it.

He and his wife of four years, Rebecca, had met for the weekend in Boston. She was scheduled to fly back to New Mexico when her husband flew off to work, but the pair almost changed plans to spend a few more hours together in the air. She considered switching to fly on his plane.

In the end, she worried that she might not be able to rearrange her flights to get home and kept her original plan.

What a tragedy! My heart still aches twenty three years later. I once went on a missions trip with him at a colonia in Juarez Mexico. He loved the Lord and had a servants heart. I believe the building housed orphans and they were putting the finishing touches to the two story cinder block building. That was the last time I remember seeing my brother in Christ. What a blessing it was to know him.

Backing the Blue, and those that served. He died doing what he loved. This 9/11 I participate in the 9/11 Remembrance Run. I'll be carrying a tag with Alfred Marchand's name, and remembering the honor with which he served others. For personal reasons, I was hoping I would be able to run this race for a first responder, or a member of the flight crew. Not that the passengers were not equally important. I just had my reasons. But, I didn't specify, and would have been honored either way. I am honored to race for Alfred Marchand. Not only was he a first responder, but that day he was part of the flight crew. I can think of no greater honor. May his family find peace, and know his life, and service is not forgotten.

Just remembering...

That we were about the same age, in our early 20s, when Al took a night class from me at NMSU/Alamogordo...

That Al came to our house, in full patrolman's uniform, at our request, when four-year-old Jerico shoplifted some Michael Jackson bubble-gum cards and spoke to him so tenderly...

That Joshua and Jerico, who grew up on the same street, went on to play high-school football together...

That our lives were blessed by knowing Al Marchand.

Thinking of you today...as we finished our interviews at United and were waiting for transport back...we were told not to say that we had been hired to the others in the lobby, but you took one look at my face and smiled at me..."You got the job, too, right?" I laughed, not knowing then you were a cop and could read people well...we chatted and I left that day with a new friend. Miss your smile and ability to put anyone at ease.

I had many different things I could say about AL I first met him in 84. ..he was the first responder at all of my factory adventures. .we both had a tramatic experience on my 30th birthday@6:30 am September 28th. ...he was by my side. ..When We Were Able To Talk About It WE Both Agreed WE Hated OUR Jobs. ..he wanted to see the world. .I just wanted to get away from the same pressure cooker. We both accomplished that. ..he was an amazing influence on my life. .

Again, so happy that they had another flight attendant who really loved his job and who really loved to fly in their last hours, all the passengers did to make their last moments pleasant .... it does really matter to know that fact. I know that God is watching over you and all the others in Heaven & your life wasn't wasted. You died for all of us.

I am a Flight Attendant for Alaska Airlines and I had the pleasure of meeting Alfred on his way to interview for his Flight Attendant position with United Airlines. My crew and I didn't believe him when he told us what he was doing because he was so tough and burly and didn't seem to fit "the mold". Actually, I thought he was teasing us or making fun of us. However, after talking to him for awhile we realized how kind and lighthearted he was and so very personable that we were sure that he indeed would fit into the Flight Attendant world. We started giving him advice, interview tips and asked him practice questions to get him prepared for his interview. (which I have felt guilt for ever since 9/11) My heart absolutely broke when I saw his face on the news that horrible day. I'm sure he would have been hired with or without our help but i still can't help but feel a bit of responsibility for his fate. We had a lot of fun with him on that flight and I will never forget him. Alfred left a lasting impression on me and my heart still aches for someone I knew for less than 2 hours. On 9/11/2014 I will be doing a stair climb in honor of all the innocent people lost that day and I will where the name Alfred G. Marchand with pride while doing it. RIP Alfred

I had the pleasure of flying with Alfred on LHR-BOS in June 2001,we worked together in the Business Cabin. He made a great impression on me as he was so humble in his ways. I took the mickey out of him for running around after demanding passengers when he could have been enjoying a peaceful retirement. His answer was that he felt blessed to have the opportunity to do something new and get benefits which enabled him to visit his family on the west coast. I remember thinking what a great attitude he had to life.
Now I feel blessed to have met him

I never shared this with anyone, but I met Alfred in a London pub at Piccadilly Circus in June of 2001. I was with a friend when he sat next to us and asked if we were American. When we answered yes, he seemed pretty excited to meet two Americans in a pub full of what appeared to be semi rowdy Brits. I remember him to be a very friendly person. Our conversation was mainly on how much he loved what he did, and his prior law enforcement carrier. When I saw his face on 9/11, I recognized him right away, I was shocked to say the least. We just met this man randomly, in London, three months before the most horrific day in American history, and he was caught in the middle of it. I told the friend I was with in London, and she couldn't believe it either. We asked each other what could it have meant. I still wonder to this day. I don't believe in coincidences, so I know there was a reason for us to run into this man three months before his untimely death in a London pub. Unfortunately, I don't think I will ever figure it out. My God rest his soul, and may God bring peace to his surviving family.

I wear a memorial bracelet with Alfred Marchand's name. My cousin sat by him on a flight back from Hawaii a few months before Sept. 11. Al told my cousin that he loved people and that he figured if a plane were ever to go down, he would be there to bring a whole plane full of people to know Jesus before they died. This touched my heart and when I read about him being a man of God who served others, I sent for the bracelet. That way I can share his testimony with anyone who asks.

September 11, 2009

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Well Al.. its comin around again. We will get thru it like we have the past 7 yrs. but just know each year that it goes by, it NEVER gets easier! You would think i would miss u less and less as time goes by, but it is exactly the opposite. I miss you more and more! I still cant believe you're gone... U have been such a HUGE influince in my life. I remember when we went to Canada and u were driving me to the mall. I wanted to take a picture and accidentally opened the back of the camera. All the pictures that you took of family and friends in North Dakota were gone!! but u didnt get mad, u just looked at me and even tho i know u wanted to yell, u jus shrugged it off n said u would go get some new film. U always had that comfort feeling about u that always made me feel safe! i know u are still with me now and i hope i make u proud. Although i wish i could see u as i walk down the isle, or have you hold my children when they are born, i know u will be rite there with me thru it all. I honestly believe you are my guardian angel, and will get me thru life, as you would if u were still here with us. I love you so much and miss u incredibly!!!! See u soon! Love ur tunia.. <3

Boy, yesterday (9/11/07) was so hard. I don't think there is a day that goes by that I don't think of Al. I will never forget Sep. 11, 2001. I am scarred by it's affects....even now, six years later.
I worked closely with Al several years ago, while I was Sales Mgr. at the Cellular One office in Alamogordo. Although I only knew him in a professional capacity, I thought a lot of him. Al was always professional, gracious and kind.
I remember hearing his name on the television news, on that day and my heart literally broke into a million pieces. All I could think about was his family. I still hurt for you all.
I wear a silver bracelet with Al's name and flight number engraved on it, in his memory. It serves as a reminder of just how precious life really is. I will never, ever forget. My life was changed forever on that day. I owe a huge debt of gratitude that can't ever be repaid.

To the family, know you're thought of often. We don't know eachother, but we are brothers & sisters in Christ. One day, we'll all be together.....what a glorious day that will be!

Be Blessed....You are truly loved.

Al was a very special guy. Al and our son, Craig, were Room-mates while in flight attendant training for United Airlines. He has a special place in our hearts. I will always remember his calm, reassuring, and caring personality. He talked about how tough it was to go back to studying (to be a flight attendent)... especially as an adult. He would laugh at how hard he had to work to keep up with the studys while it all came so easy to Craig. It was pleasure to meet him at the graduation ceremony. Dear Merchand Family,

Growing up in Alomogordo, I was only a little boy when I met Al. He worked with my father, Albert Northrup in DPS. I know that he is resting in the arms of Jesus. From what I know, he was close friends with my father. I know that they are catching up on old times together. Mr. Merchand was a beacon of light and hope on that dreadful day. We will see him again one day. May God richly bless you all.

TO The Marchand Family,

I attend St Pius X High School in Houston Texas. This week we are remembering those who were killed on September 11th. We, along with other schools, made wrist bands with all the victims names printed on them. I received Mr. Marchand's wrist band. On the day of September 10th I will be fasting in honor of him. I will keep him and his family in my thoughts and prayers and hope that time will heal.

Becky, My thoughts and prayers are still with you, the boys, and your family. I remember Al always smiling and hugging and generally making the day better, every Sunday that I saw him.... We are blessed to have your family as a part of our church family. I pray God continue to give you strength. Love, Lori

To the Marchand Family,

My husband and I have not lived in New Mexico long, but we had heard of Mr. Marchand and the wonderful things he did for this community. We did not the have the pleasure of knowing this wonderful man, but be assured My husband and I stood vigil with other fellow town people and I arrived at the police station to lie flowers in his honor upon hearing the news. Mrs. Marchand our hearts were with you and your family on the frightful day last year, and are with America on it's quest for peace. Sincerely,

Roberto Chavez

Thank you to all that have prayed for our family. Al was a wonderful man and I'm so blessed to have spent 8 1/2 years of my life with him. I am proud to have been his wife, even for the short time that we had together.

God used Al that day and is continuing to use his story to this day. With the Lord's strength, I will continue to tell his story and carry his legacy on. He made us proud and I know he was in God's will on 9/11.

To the Marchand family,

May God give you comfort and strength during your times of sorrow and need, and may you find comfort in the fact that people all over the country are praying for Alfred and his family. It takes a very special type of person to be an airline attendant and I'm glad that Alfred was able to experience the joy of doing a job that he loved. May God Bless you all until you are with him again.

We thank Alfred for the time he protected others as a police officer. Such a dedication comes with a brave, warm and caring heart. May his courage, life and love continue living in all who love him. Our hearts cry with you in your great loss of Alfred.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I was born and raised in Alamogordo, NM. As a matter of fact, I grew up at 1306 Ridgrecrest Ct. Though I never met Al personally, I did see him many times when I went to visit my parents, Louis and Hortensia Avila. They knew him and his wife Becky very well. They've been next-door neighbors for almost 20 years. My prayers to Becky and the boys. God bless you all and God Bless America!

I knew Al since 1986 and I always thought he was such a nice person. I was so sad when I heard of his death, until I heard Rebecca and Josh mention how Al had come to know the Lord. I then knew that your husband and Josh your father had a purpose for being on that flight that morning. I believe he was doing exactly what he had a passion for and that was speaking to people on that flight about Our Great Savior and Lord. I'm sure your purpose here on Earth is to continue speaking of the Lord to others just as Al did on his way home.

God Bless you all and my thoughts and prayers are with your family and Al.

I knew Al over 20 years ago when I lived next door to him in a trailer court. He always impressed me by being one of the most likable of people with concern and care for everyone. I bought a Mercy Band and was going to choose his name because I knew him. When I read that he had become a Christian somewhere in the past 20 years I realized why the Lord checked me from choosing his name. He fulfilled his mission on this earth and his family is secure in the Lord's hands right now. So I have another family to pray for as I prayed for my neighbors 20 years ago. The Lord is faithful and that is an awesome fact. May you go with God, Rebecca, the Lord will sustain you and hold you up. Your husband wears a crown of life that is imperishable.

Dear Family of Alfred Marchand, I am so sorry for the loss of a great man. I had heard the interview with his son and wife on the morning show while I was in my car. To hear there was a christian on one of those flights, just gave me so much hope. I am so thankful for your husband being there to lead someone to the lord in those last minutes. He must be so proud to have a wife and son that will proclaim their christian faith on National television. I have told so many of your husbands story. You are in my thoughts and prayers. :)
