Columbus, Georgia - Col. (Ret.) Stephen F. Bettes, age 75, died March 28, 2021. Dr. Bettes was born on February 11, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Janet and Robert Bettes. Steve was a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and received his DDS degree in 1971 at Ohio State University. Other than two years in private practice in Columbus, Ohio, he served as a dental officer in the United States Army for 27 years. During his military career, Colonel Bettes received numerous military awards and accommodations, including the Legion of Merit, 4 meritorious service Awards, 4 Army Commendation Awards, 2 Army Achievement Awards, the Expert Field Medical Badge, and he was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College. His proudest assignment was as commander of the 618th Medical Company (DS) in Seoul, South Korea from 1993 through 1995, though he was particularly proud of each Korean assignment.
Dr. Bettes married Ok Hui Kim of South Korea in September 1980 in El Paso, Texas. Throughout their marriage, they served assignments in Monterey, CA; Clarksville, TN; and Korea two additional times. He is survived by his wife and his son, Alan. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the John B. Amos Cancer Center or PAWS Humane Society.
