Darius Washington Obituary
Darius James Washington, 77, of Columbus passed on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at his residence surrounded by his family. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at St. John AME Church 3980 Steam Mill Road, Columbus, GA 31907. Rev. Olivia Massey of Allen Temple AME Church will be officiating and Rev. Dr. Richard A. Washington, host Pastor will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be held in Green Acres Cemetery according to the Charles E. Huff's International Funeral Home, Inc. Viewing will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025 from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM at the funeral home located at 927-5th Avenue, Columbus.
Darius James Washington affectionately known as Shug was born February 28, 1954 in Columbus, Georgia to Zadie Washington and the late Matthew Washington Sr. Darius accepted Christ at a very early age and joined Allen Temple A.M.E. Church of Columbus, Georgia. He was a faithful member of the church his entire life where he served on the Trustee Board, Stewart Board, and the Sons of Allen Board. He also sung with the Allen Temple Male Chorus. He always dedicated himself to his church family as he focused on the building of God's Kingdom daily. Darius was educated in the Muscogee County School System. He graduated from Columbus High School. He then furthered his education at Fort Valley State University and Columbus State University. While in college Darius joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. vowing his unwavering commitment to the principles of his brotherhood. He stood firmly on their motto "First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All." Darius worked at Swift Textile in the allocations department as a leader and innovator in his field. He was able to cultivate a long career that lasted for over 30 years. He then retired from Swift and began a second career at Kodak where he provided his expertise and dedicated work ethic for over ten years and then also retired from Kodak. Darius married Georgetta (Holcey) Washington on June 27, 1987 and through their beautiful union of love one daughter was born Danielle Washington. He cherished being a husband and a father. Devoted to his family, he found happiness in the love they shared, the laughter that filled their home, and the memories they created together. Darius was a genuine family man whose greatest joy was the time he spent with his five siblings and most importantly the Matriarch of his family his beloved mother Zadie Washington. Their loving bond was the catalyst in his heart. His family was at the center of his very life, and everything he did was rooted in his love, loyalty and faithfulness to them. Darius was also known for his playful spirit, he lived life boldly and wholeheartedly. With his big personality he brought joy and laughter wherever he went, never failing to leave a lasting impression on those around him. He also had a deep love for sports. He enjoyed keeping up with the latest happenings in football and basketball. His kindness, authentic heart and ability to make life fun will be remembered always by those who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving family comprised of his mother Zadie Washington. His five siblings, Matthew Washington Jr. (deceased Sheryl Faye) Patricia Gainer (Al), Eugene Washington, Drucilla Hinkle (Tyrone) Jasper Washington (Phyllis) and his devoted and loving daughter Danielle Washington. He also leaves behind two special aunts Rev. Izory W. Lynn and Mattie Washington, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. A special expression of gratitude to his Sister Drucilla Hinkle, a devoted niece Temika Washington and a devoted nephew Jerry Hinkle for their unwavering dedication to Darius in his final days. His family is committed to honoring his life. He leaves behind an amazing legacy through his actions, achievements, and the love he shared through his life.
