Columbus, GA- Dr. Eunice Sylvia Stephens Thomas of 1116 Glenwood Road, Columbus, GA passed on Sunday, August 17, 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia after a lengthy illness just two days before her birthday. A Grand Celebration for the Life of a Grand and Gracious Lady will be held on Friday, August 29, 2014 at 12:00PM and a private Zeta Burial Service at 10AM both at First African Baptist Church, 911 Fifth Avenue, Columbus, GA with Pastor Roderick Green, Presiding. Interment will follow at Green Acres Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, August 28, 2014 from 1:00PM until 7:00PM at the funeral home according to Hill-Watson-People's Funeral Service LLC, 2919 Hamilton Road, Columbus, GA. Dr. Thomas was a retired educator of Muscogee County School System, the 19th International President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., a Trustee of Benedict College, and retired civil servant. Eunice loved imparting knowledge, moral values and standards of excellence whether she was a teacher, Assistant Principal or Principal. She was employed of Ethel Knight K-8 School in Troup County, Georgia, Cusseta Road Elementary and Winterfield Elementary schools in Muscogee County School District and retired in 1982. She treated every child as if they could become the next world renowned civil rights leader, poet, author, inventor, politician, doctor, lawyer, entertainer, minister, missionary, educator, entrepreneur, athlete or the President of the United States…giving each of them her best and requiring the same from them. She not only taught them, but she loved them often times, at her own expense, purchasing clothes, shoes and coats for those in need. Dr. Thomas advocated: "Do your best and be the best you can be without doing harm to others." In lieu of flowers Dr. Thomas requested donations be made to the Dr. Eunice S. Thomas Endowed Scholarship Fund at Benedict College, 1600 Harden Street, Columbia, SC 29204

I just found out Dr.Thomas had passed. I send my belated condolences to her family. Dr. Thomas was my 6th grade homeroom teacher at Winterfield Elementary in Columbus, Ga ('73-'74 SY). I loved her as my teacher, she taught me the values of being honest and taking responsibility for your actions. I have and will continue to miss her!

It was a shock to hear the news of Mrs. Thomas's passing. She was my Social Studies teacher in the 5th grade and my Lady-In-Waiting in 1976 when I was presented as a Debutante. It was an honor to have known such a great person and I will truly miss her. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
