GLENN HARRIS Obituary

Glenn A. Harris Attorney Glenn left this temporal life on 7/22/14 after a long battle with severe psoriatic arthritis that left his limbs and hands deformed and unusable. We are thankful that he is no longer constrained by this disease and has now entered his eternal home with the Lord. Glenn was born in Bow Bells, London, England on 1/11/46, making him a true cockney. Glenn's mother was British and his father was a southerner from Tennessee. Glenn grew up in London and displayed a complex mix of British and Southern customs. In high school, Glenn was a goal keeper in a British hockey league. He had dual citizenship, and, upon graduation, he was drafted into the US Army to serve in Viet Nam. He was allowed to complete college at Middle Tennessee State University, where he played as catcher for the baseball team. Thereafter, he attended jump school and Officer's Candidate School, where he met his best friend, David Donovan. After service as a captain during the war, Glenn began his first career in sales, ending in the mid 1980's with the position of Regional Sales Manager for the Brown & Haley Candy Co. He challenged authority. When he was told to wear a jacket and tie for his office days at B&H, he purchased the ugliest plaid blazer and tie he could find at Goodwill. He claimed to have worn them henceforth. Glenn was a persistent and immovable advocate for any cause he took up. He relished taking a position on any subject, even if he did not genuinely believe it, just to have a debate and bring his opponent to exasperation. He decided to enter a second career as a lawyer, graduating from the UPS School of Law in 1990. A zealous advocate for his clients, he thoroughly enjoyed being in court. And, despite his history as a fashion disaster, he was always impeccably dressed for hearings. Glenn loved animals. He and his former wife, Wendy, rescued and spoiled many dogs and cats. As Glenn became increasingly unable to care for his pets, he lost his determination to battle his illness. He was equally attached to Lionel toy trains. He was creative with train layouts, constructing them at train shows and at the history museum in Tacoma. He was a member of the Pacific Northwest Train Collectors Association. Glenn was an avid Vancouver Canucks fan. He enjoyed jazz music and played the saxophone. He was an energetic athlete, participating in racquetball, squash, and as a swimmer of the Masters Swim Club at the Tacoma YMCA. As he became less able to participate in sports, he enjoyed reading, writing, and crossword puzzles, at which he was especially proficient. He had been working on a fiction novel when he passed away. He was known for his quick wit, dry humor, a dry Bombay Safire Martini, devious pranks, and for winking at women to get a smile. He adored and respected women and embraced chivalry. He leaves behind his sister, Suzanne Kriefall, her husband, Andreas, and their children Nicola and Alexander, all in New York. He enjoyed a close relationship with his baby sister, despite the miles. They spent many hours reminiscing about their childhoods the last few years. He was fiercely protective of Suzanne, and he recently expressed amazement at her equivalent tenacity when called upon to help him navigate the health care maze. Glenn leaves behind his former wife and one of his best friends, attorney Wendy Zicht (Tacoma). Glenn and Wendy (whom he referred to as "Bubb") were law school classmates and "study buddies." They developed a close friendship and eventually married in 1995. They remained close friends after divorce. Wendy continued to assist Glenn as his illness worsened and advocated for medical and rehabilitation services until Glenn's pride prevented him from accepting further assistance from anyone. Glenn leaves behind other extended family, including his niece Tracey Norton (Elijah) of Florida and her children. He is preceded in death by his mother Joyce (Joy) Harris, father Andrew Harris, and brother Ray Harris. Those who were fortunate enough to get past the armor around his heart knew him as a deeply loving and loyal friend. Accordingly, they came to his aid without a thought. Thank you especially to attorney Rogers Wilson and his wife Sharon; David Donovan, The Rev. Morgan Johnson, Lynette (Clip and Clean, Tacoma); neighbors Susan, Chip, Debbie, and Mike; and the mailman Mark Marsak. You have been angels, giving unconditionally of your time and caring. Services will be held at Old St. Peter's Episcopal Church, where Glenn was a member, located at 2910 North Starr Street, Tacoma, WA, on Tuesday, August 5th, at 3:00 p.m. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tacoma-Pierce County Humane Society in his name.

I hope Glenn is emulating Steve McQueen from the movie, "Great Escape" in heaven as we did at London Central High School in England - white jeans, blue sweatshirt turned inside out with the sleeves cut off, and PF Flyers tennis shoes. You will be missed and honored by many.

My sincere condolences, Wendy, and family members. I had the great fortune of meeting Glenn years ago when he had an unsavory client that needed representation on an appeal of an unpopular case. His advocacy for our client never waivered. And I believe his chivalry went far beyond the civil use of that word. On the day of the "great earthquake" (was it in 2001?), we were meeting in the Union Station discussing our unpopular client, sitting under the huge blue Chihuly glass chandelier, when suddenly it sounded like a train roaring and the glass started rattling and shaking. Fearing it would break into millions of chards, we instinctively ran to a corner, where he protected me with his own body. I felt that instead of being chivalrous he was back in combat mode, protecting a fellow soldier! I have never forgotten that. An admirable fighting spirit, an admirable man. I feel privileged to have known him, even briefly. My prayers are with you.
