Greg,
You and I were stationed at Ft Stewart GA. I have missed you over the years. I have since retired from the Army. There are many things to miss about you but, like most is was was your smile. Your smile said it all.... I wanted to let you and your family know that you are not forgotten. This week, in the Pentagon, your picture was own display along with many of our brothers and sisters from all branches of the military. We have not forgotten about you and the sacrifice you made for your family, fellow soldiers, and country. Rest easy my friend.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Gregory, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

The last time that I saw Greg was at the foundry. He was walking towards me wearing his worn green fatigue army jacket. He had a can of coke in the bottom right pocket. I told him that it was going to get warm in his pocket. His reply was “Never that”. I said “How you figure”. Then he smiled at me the way he did when he had the answer to any question. “I’m to cool” We both laughed for a minute and shook hands and gave each other a hug.
That was the day that he told me that he was going active. I saw the pride that he took when the words came out of his mouth. He told me that he felt that he needed the go help out the boys in Iraq. I told him that if he felt that he to go and that it made him happy well God bless you and I will see you when you get back. He came home on leave and we didn’t touch bases until the day before he was going to go back. We spoke over the phone making fun about the crazy things that happened at the foundry. We said our good byes and made plans for the next time.
Well I just got back from Chile to find out what happened. Greg is a TRUE AMERICAN HERO. Nobody could ever take that from him. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE MY BROTHER. I KNOW THAT YOU DID WHAT YOU HAD TO DO AND YOU WERE SMILING AND JOKING THE WHOLE TIME.

I remember Greg, (his mom, dad, brother Benjamin and sisters) from his childhood of Kindergarden, Elementary, Middle, and Junior High School in Cusseta. Unfortunately life takes each of us in different directions and you lose track of the younger ones. Just know you all are in my prayers. God bless this family.

Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. This precious life, lived and lost in love of America, epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. Evangelist Elam,
I was deeply moved by the loss of your husband. As a woman of God I know you know we can't ever question God and that He is the "giver and taker" of life. Knowing that "...being absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.." is comforting to all of us who know Christ.
I thank God because Gregory will "...never know pain or suffering again..." I thank God because He has "...wiped away all tears from Gregory's eyes..." I thank God because He is your refuge and strength and will forever be a shelter for you, Jamieliah, Imani Alish.
I will FOREVER "Salute" Gregory L. Elam!
Almighty God is in control of all of your tomorrows. Continue to "...walk worthy of the call on your life..." and I see you there where we can rejoin our loved ones!
Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal!
You are never alone because God's Word teaches us to "...bear one anothers burdens, thus fulfil the law of Christ"
Yours in Christ,

SSG Elam "E" you will truly be missed. When you first came to 3rd PLT, I remember that day. Your smile was bright and from that moment I knew that the Soldiers of 3rd PLT would be taken care of once I turned the platoon over to you. SSG E, I just want to tell you that I'm proud to have known you, grown close to you, taught you, become a friend to you, respect you and learn from you. Although you are no longer with us, you will always be remembered and never will be forgotten. I admired you because you took on a duty to become a 92M which is a job that most would never want to endure. You led, 3rd platoon "Hellraisers" from the front and did not waiver just as you promised me you would. We all appreciate you for that. I will miss you my friend, the memories of having you in 3rd PLT will remain embedded in my heart, the tooth pick in your mouth, the gold tooth, the cold pizza you loved to eat at the bowling alley, you dressing up like one of the temptations with a afro wig on at my surprise party that you and 3rd gave me. I will always remember you SSG Elam. Rest Easy

SSG E,
The melancholy, the anger of going back without you; my first squad leader as an NCO, the one who instilled confidence in me to lead troops in a time when our nation is at war.
From the moment I met you clad in an outdated BDU field jacket, I knew that you were special. It was SGT's Time Training, you were put in charge to lead a squad through the woods, you made the exercise fun by joking and acting a fool.
I turned to my peer this day and said, "I like this guy" she agreed.
Soon thereafter you would unexpectedly become the Plt. Sgt. Those moments that you took charge of the formation preaching like a Pastor of what would happen that day, or what NOT to do on the weekend were more than entertaining-I'm going to miss that. Your character, your personality was like no other, you brought a different style of leadership to the table that anyone could appreciate.
Whose going to challenge me now when it's time to take that PT test? I was ready for you old man, ready to beat you on that run.
Who will call me cantaloupe and poke fun at my freezy hair, or losing too much weight while deployed? It's not going to be the same without you. Forever you are embedded in my heart- I will never look at life the same.
Your presence in my life and now in passing has put a lot of things into prospective...I need to apperciate those around me more....I need to take the time out to communicate effectively.....the list goes on. All in all, I'm going to miss you..
My heart goes out to your family, my eyes swell with tears for their loss. May God guide them through this tumultuous time.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!
I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPortraits/homepage,
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

Father we entrust our brother Gregory to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Gregory in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

To the Family: There are few words a person can say to ease the pain felt when you loose someone. So i'll just say this........... Life is a gift and as we all know gifts never last forever. But once the gift is gone you now have an abundance of memories to last a lifetime. Therefore instead of mourning the loss of your Husband, Father, Brother & Friend; Cherish the memories you have of your Husband, Father, Brother & Friend. Our hearts and prayers are with you
SSG Elam: Sergeant "E", You'll be missed by all who knew you (your tooth pick as well). Especially the soldiers in the 54th. We'll save a seat for you on our flight home................. Rest Peacefully Sergeant "E"

This is hard to accept that our friend and brother has taken the "stair way to heaven". I met "E" in Oct 06 when we both were going to Mortuary Affairs School in Ft. Lee, VA. I said to myself that this is one cool guy that I would love to hang out with, well as it seems I got that chance to do such. We ended up being in the same platoon together and became really close, the one thing i liked about him was, he truely was a family man talking about his wife and kids which brought a big smile to his face so he could show off his gold tooth. He would also talk about his brother, how they would get together and mix old school music with the new school. He and I would sit in his little pick-up truck and listen to mix cd's that him and his brother had made, which was very good by the way. "E" and I would call each other while we were in theater talking about what we was going to do when our time was up over here and how long we was going to take leave to be with our loved ones. His platoon want be the same anymore without him standing in front of it and I will miss those talks him and I shared after work about life, family, and friends. Well my friend, my brother YOUR PLATOON WILL MISS YOU DEARLY, GOD BLESS.

I can't even find the words...I lost my 19 year old son--5 Sept 2007, Balad, Iraq. I am absolutely devastated and I know that you are too...but find comfort in the fact that we will see our loved ones, our heroes again. Do I wish that I could trade places with my son? ABSOLUTELY not. He is in the arms of our Lord--"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away" ~Rev 21:4
What a wonderful thought...
May God bless Staff Sgt. Gregory Elam, God bless you and your family and God bless America!

Greenwave Class of 1986 -
Dear Greg,
I can't believe it's been over 20 years.
It seems like only yesterday that we were laughing and joking together in class.
As with the passing of other friends from our class, you too take a piece of each of us with you.
Hold on to that piece for each of us as our RSVP to join each of you one day in His Kingdom.
We will hold on to our memories of you to tide us over until we get there.
I have asked those of us who cannot attend your home going service on Wednesday to wear their Green & Gold lapel pins on that day in your memory.
Our prayers, thoughts and love are with you and your family,
Willie & Brenda Jones
