Hedy McDowell Obituary

Hedy
McDowell
July 12, 1949-
November 12, 2017
Midland, GA- Hedy McDowell, choir director and cantor at Christ the King Catholic Church in Pine Mountain, joined the choir of Angeles, Sunday, November 12, 2017 at her home.
Hedy loved sports, excelling in bowling, tennis and in her later years golf. She was a past president of the Fort Benning Ladies Golf Association and winner of the association's Punchbowl. She also won the Fort Benning women's post championship. During those years she carded four holes-in-one at various courses. Her first love, however, was her family. She made it a point to attend milestone events such as birthdays, graduations and competitive events. When she was with grandchildren she would accept any challenge they threw her way from riding a horse to shooting down a water slide and nearly drowning. Indoor events would find her at the kitchen table playing games and coloring for hours, then reading them bedtime stories before praying with them and tucking them into bed at night. Hedy was a secretary in the Television Division of the U.S. Army Infantry school when she met Lt. Richard McDowell who would become her husband. They traveled to Panama, Europe and Hawaii and other stateside assignments. She was a staffing specialist in the Office of Civilian Personnel at Fort Drum and when they returned to Columbus, she became the training and conference coordinator for the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police. She was preceded in death by her father Roe Ragan.
Hedy is survived by her husband Richard James McDowell, Midland, GA; mother Avis Lemke Ragan, Columbus, GA; children Todd (Jennifer) McDowell, Coco Beach, FL; Maria (Robert) Brown, Columbus, GA; brothers Greg (Martha) Ragan, Columbus, GA; Steve (Pamela) Ragan, Charlotte, NC; Wayne (Roni) Ragan, Tiawan; grandchildren Jack Brown, Andrew Brown, Christos McDowell, Brianna McDowell, and Ellieana McDowell.
The Funeral Mass is Friday, November 17th, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, Pine Mountain, GA with Fr. J. Ronnie Madden as celebrant. Visitation will be Thursday, November 16th, 2017 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. ending with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Cox Funeral Home, Chapel. Private interment will be in the Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, AL.
