Ingrid Maria Lesiw
July 20, 1940 - November 12, 2021
Columbus, Georgia - Ingrid Maria Lesiw, 81, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away peacefully at her home on November 12, 2021. She was born in Dortmund, Germany, on July 20, 1940. Ingrid was the only child to Karl and Cecilia Schmitz, but sadly, never knew her father, who was killed before she was born during World War II.
Ingrid met Wally, the love of her life, on a blind date during Thanksgiving Day, 1981, in the small village of Bollingsdorf, Germany, where he, along with the family that had invited him for dinner were the only Americans. Language was not a barrier for either Ingrid or Wally because it was love at first sight for both of them. They dated for many months and were finally married in Odense, Denmark, in October 1982.
During Wally's military career, Ingrid was the loving wife, caring mother, and perfect hostess that took each move, whether to a new post in America, or to another country, with a gracious smile that could and did light up any room she entered. She enjoyed the travel and the challenges it presented of being a military wife and stay-at home mother.
Ingrid was not only a loving wife, partner, and confidant to Wally, for 40 years, she was also a proud mother of her sons, Thomas and Andreas; a caring grandmother to Kasi and Maximilian; and a very loving great grandmother to Lilly, Isabell, Henasi, and Rosa. In addition to her family, Ingrid was well liked and loved as a thoughtful friend and neighbor wherever she and Wally were assigned.
A private family service will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary of Columbus. Interment will follow at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery.
As Ingrid told her family while battling Stage III Stomach Cancer, "You can cry and close your mind and feel empty when l'm gone or you can do what I want you to do - Smile, open your heart and love one another and go about living your life."
