Jack Hughston Obituary

Jack C. Hughston April 17, 1917 - September 6, 2004 CATAULA, GA - Jack C. Hughston, MD, orthopedist, founder of the Hughston Clinic and a pioneer in the field of sports medicine, died Monday, September 6, 2004, at his home in Cataula, Georgia. Dr. Hughston was born on April 17, 1917, in Florence, Alabama, the son of the late Madeline Chandler Hughston and Talmadge Hughston. He moved to Columbus, Georgia upon his mother's marriage to Edgar Cullen Mayo. Dr. Hughston was educated in the local public schools. He graduated from Auburn University and LSU University School of Medicine. Dr. Hughston served for 32 months as Captain with the U.S. Army. Then, he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Duke University Hospital and Shriner Crippled Children's Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina. Dr. Hughston returned to Columbus and established the Hughston Clinic in 1949. He went on to become one of the most respected practitioners of orthopedics and sports medicine in the country. In the early 1950's, Dr. Hughston become a leader in developing the Crippled Children's Clinics of the Public Health Department in Georgia. At the same time he developed an interest in the welfare of athletes in area high schools and Auburn University, and over the next several years, he became one of the pioneers of the specialty of sports medicine. He was chairman of Sports Medicine for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons from 1965 through 1975. He was one of the founders of the American Society for Sports Medicine and the International Society of the Knee and Honorary Founder of the National Athletic Trainers Association. He started the American Journal of Sports Medicine, a prestigious scientific journal of which he was editor from 1972 through 1989. In 1970, Dr. Hughston was appointed Clinical Professor in the training of Tulane orthopedic residents. He received an honorary doctor of science degree from Auburn University and was an adjunct professor at Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Hughston devoted the greater part of his life to education and research in orthopedics and sports medicine. His concept of a foundation for teaching and research as a necessary part of the clinical practice of orthopedics became a reality when he established the Hughston Sports Medicine Foundation. Another result of his lifelong dedication to orthopedic sports medicine is the Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital, the first hospital of its kind, which was built by the Hospital Corporation of America in Columbus, Georgia in 1984. Physician, educator and author, Dr. Hughston wrote several books and numerous scientific articles that were published in peer-reviewed medical journals. He is well known for his work on treating knee injuries and for being the first to establish postdoctoral fellowships in sports medicine that allow physicians who have completed their formal medical training to increase their exposure to orthopedic sports medicine. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Hardaway Hughston; children, Louise Hughston O'Kelley, Edgar Mayo Hughston and his wife Ann, and Jack Chandler Hughston Jr.; and grandchildren, Sally Foley Hughston, Sarah O'Kelley Etheridge and Jack Mayo Hughston. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Thursday, September 9, 2004, at 11:00 a.m., according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road. To the family of Dr. Jack Hughston,

Thank you for sharing this wonderful man with so many. I am one of countless people whose life was changed by the touch of his hands. He carefully reconstructed the knee of a 17-year old aspiring tennis star. In doing so he reconstructed a life. His work made my knee perform where others said it couldn't. As a result I had a second chance at living a normal life free from braces, crutches and wheel chairs. It has been 22 years since the first surgery and something like 17 since I last saw him. But daily he has been in my prayers and daily his teachings, encouragement and belief in me live on. My heart goes out to you during this incrdible time of loss. I respected him more than words can say and loved him from the depths of my heart. Praying for you, Kim Miller

My deepest sympathy to the Hughston family, as well as the staff at the Hughston Clinic. I was a patient of Dr. Fred Allman. He always said that if something happened to him, then go see Dr. Jack. I know heaven has got a better place, because Dr. Fred and Dr. Jack are there looking down and seeing just how many lives that they touched!

My deepest sympathies to the Husghston family. My memories of Dr. Hughston go back many years to the old office at the Physicians Building and running between the office and my mother's office at Rehab Services. Mom, Francine Dimenstien, worked with Dr. Hughston as a physical therapist. Two of my fondest memories of Dr. Hughston are the bow ties always sticking out of his jacket. He had to wear a bow tie so he wouldn't get plaster on his tie. My other is as patient. Dr. Hughston gave up fox hunting one day to do my knee surgery, a procedure I will always be grateful for his finding and saving me years of discomfort, and came to St. Francis to do it. Then trying to be nice while making rounds was removing plaster from the bottom of my foot( in those days he put you in a straight leg cast)and didn't know I was ticklish there. I don't know who felt worse, Dr. Hughston for making me try to move my knee or me for almost kicking him. I know heaven won't be the same now with Dr. Hughston and Francine there to make sure all their patients are doing those leg lifts!!!

Doc Hughston first repaired my ankle while I was in college. Told me I would have been better off breaking it, but will be better than new...it was. Then did my knee a couple of years later. A good friend of my Dad and Mom. He will be missed, but his spirit will endure.

Doctor Hughtston taught me so much. It was my pleasure to have worked for him. He was always looking for something to do. We used to get the Burpee catalog and order his garden seeds and I can remember getting him Soybeans from BW Capps, to plant for wildlife. He loved life and loved people. He will be greatly missed. I can hear him laughing right now.
