James Chappel Obituary
May 14, 1935 - March 24, 2025
Durham, North Carolina - James Harvey Chappel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and mentor, passed away on March 24, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on May 14, 1935, in Malden, Massachusetts, Jim was the eldest son of Barbara and James L. Chappel. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force, specializing in languages and military intelligence, which shaped his lifelong curiosity and appreciation for diverse cultures.
Jim transitioned to a career in education, becoming a long-time Professor of English at Columbus State University (CSU). He taught German, English, Latin, and various linguistics courses, retiring in 1997 but continuing to teach part-time until May 2011 His dedication to students earned him several accolades, including the Distinguished Professor Award, Outstanding Advisor Award, and Faculty Service Award. He was instrumental in increasing the number of international students at CSU and served on numerous committees.
In retirement, Jim focused on his family, especially his grandchildren, attending their events and tutoring them. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Edna, his parents, and his brother David. He is survived by his daughter Linda Chappel of Durham, North Carolina, son James Chappel of Columbus, Georgia, grandsons Tyler Chappel and wife Shannon, and great-granddaughter Charlotte of San Antonio, Texas, James Thomas Chappel of Marietta, Georgia, and Patrick Chappel of New York, New York.
Remembrances will be shared on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home in Columbus, GA, with family visitation from 2:00 to 3:00 PM. A committal service with honors will follow on Monday, March 31, 2025, at 1:30 PM at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Alabama.
