James Newman Obituary

James Gardner Newman December 11, 1920- February 14, 2007 LAGRANGE, GA— James Gardner Newman, 86, of LaGrange died Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at his residence. Mr. Newman was born December 11, 1920 in LaGrange, son of the late James Rufus and Flossie Gardner Newman. He was a member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church. During his career, Mr. Newman served as Trustee of LaGrange College; Past President of the LaGrange Rotary Club and was the longest serving Rotarian; Director of C&S Bank; and Member of the Board of Education. He also served as the Mayor of LaGrange for twenty six years; Past President of the Chamber of Commerce; Past President of the Board of Governors, Highland Country Club; and was the President of Newman Construction Company. Mr. Newman was a U.S. Navy Veteran of War World II; attended Georgia Tech; and had Gardner Newman Middle School named after him. He was preceded in death by a brother, John R. Newman and a grandson, Henry Newman. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Frankie Fling Newman; six children and their spouses, Jim and Lissa Newman; Nancy and Dan Durand, Pete and Dawn Newman; Ivy and Dusty Jones, Ruth and Phil Perdue, and Chunk and Mary Newman; sixteen grandchildren and spouses, Gardner and LeeAnn Newman, Christopher Newman, Gus Newman, Luke Newman, Darby and Alex Pippin, Kelly and Chris Cain, Sergeant Gregory Newman, U.S. Marine Corps, Anna and Benjamin Moore, Andy and Cynthia Jones, Alan Jones, Paige and Charley Lundy, Jamie and Mason Haines, Ivy Perdue, Lance Corporal John Newman, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Jud Newman, and Frances Newman; six great grandchildren, Thomas Newman, Ella Newman, J.D. Dennis, Jackson Dennis, Judson Cain, and Landon Haines; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Bill and Leown Newman; and Claire Newman. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 17, 2007 at First Presbyterian Church, LaGrange, GA. A private entombment will follow in Shadowlawn Mausoleum, LaGrange, GA. The family will be at the home of Nancy and Dan Durand, 631 Country Club Road, LaGrange, GA will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to LaGrange College, Camp Viola, or First Presbyterian Memorial Fund, LaGrange, GA in memory of Gardner Newman. Arrangements are by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 1010 Mooty Bridge Road, LaGrange, GA 30240 (706) 884-8636.
