Ellerslie, GA- James D. "Buzzy" Slayton, USN (Ret.), 58, of Ellerslie, died Sunday, January 19, 2014 at his home. Memorial services will be 11:00 am, Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the chapel of Cox Funeral Home, Hamilton. A Rosary service will be held at 7:00 pm, Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Slayton was born December 5, 1955 at Fort Benning, GA the son of William M. Slayton and the late Virginia A. Slayton. He retired from the United States Navy after 20 years of service in 1994. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. While in service in Japan, he met and married his wife, Jossie in 1981. He was stationed around the world as a Navy Seabee, mess hall manager and managed base officer's quarters. Mr. Slayton and his wife volunteered many hours each month to local Disabled American Veterans. He at one time attended Christ the King Catholic Church in Pine Mountain and was at the time of his death a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Columbus where he participated in the Couples of Christ Prayer Group. He was also a member of the VFW and the Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Slayton was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia A. Slayton and three brothers, William J. Slayton, Barney D. Slayton, and Barry L. Slayton.
Survivors include his wife, Jossie Slayton of Ellerslie; his father, William M. Slayton, two sons, Barney Slayton of Columbus and Michael Slayton of Columbus; three sisters, Debbie Slayton of Waverly Hall, Donna Slayton, Mary Murphy and her husband, Keith of Cincinnati, OH, and Jennifer Grimes of Mansfield, OH; two brothers, Michael G. Slayton and his wife Kristi L. Slayton of Midland, Johvan Slayton and his wife, Diana of Cincinnati; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Slayton may be made to: Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7 1000 Victory Drive Columbus, GA 31903
