John Henry East April 4, 1917- November 8, 2006 PHENIX CITY, AL— John Henry East, 89, of Phenix City, AL, died Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at his home. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 PM EST at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City, with Rev. Mark Hudson officiating. A private interment will be held on Monday at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening (Thursday) from 6-8 PM EST. Mr. East was born April 4, 1917 in Phenix City, AL son of the late Mitchell Henderson East and Rosa Lee Smith East. Mr. East was a United States Navy Veteran with 8 years service, serving 4 years during World War II, including the Invasion of North Africa. He was a brick mason for 17 years, a radio instructor in communications in Portland, Maine and in law enforcement for 25 years with Russell County Sheriffs Department. Mr. East was also an investigator for the District Attorney's office with Bill Benton and retired from the Attorney Generals office in 1979 as an investigator for Bill Baxley. He received a 2 year Associates Degree in Applied Police Science and was a member of the Peace Officers Association, Past President and Business Agent of Brick Masons Union. He was Manager of the Braves Little League and won Little League Championship awards 3 times, along with his good friend Charlie Stillwell. Mr. East attended First Assembly of God Church in Phenix City. He was preceded in death by a sister, Montie Lee Cox , a brother, Howard J. East and Martha Stubbs, loving provider of care after the death of his parents. Mr. East is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Jewel Bankston East of Phenix City, AL.; three sons, John Michael East and wife Carolyn of Duluth, GA., Stanley Reed East of Phenix City, AL., Carey Stuart East and wife Donna Jean of Phenix City, AL.; special sister-in-law and brother-in-law- Frances and Sam Cook of Phenix City, AL.; three grandchildren, Caleb East and wife Nancy Erin Jane and husband Israel and Matthew East; five grandchildren, Zach East, Ivey East, Ava Jane , Justin Fortune and Brittany Fortune; several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to First Assembly of God Church or organizations of your choice.
