John Hammond Obituary

John D. Hammond Sr. March 21, 1928- March 30, 2005 HAMILTON, GA— John D. Hammond Sr., 77, of Hamilton, GA died at his residence Wednesday, March 30. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, April 2, in Parkhill Cemetery according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Hammond was born March 21, 1928 in Rockford, IL son of the late Col. (Ret) Gordon Blackmon Hammond and Mary Laing Hammond. He was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran serving in the South Pacific on the U.S.S. Greenwood. Mr. Hammond started the Hammond Pool Company and was a general contractor for Hammond Construction Company. He most recently worked for Mead Coated Board. Mr. Hammond was a member of the Fish House Gang, and had toured 48 states on his Harley. He was a lifetime member of the Harley Davidson Club joining in 1947. Other accomplishments included developing the Merry Acres Industrial Park off of Morris Rd. Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred ÒMollyÓ Hammond. Survivors include his wife, Ellie Martin Hammond of Hamilton, GA; two sons and daughters-in-law, G. Dale and Hellen Hammond of Eufaula, AL, Johnny and Frieda Hammond of Columbus, GA; two step children, Donald Hammond and Gina Poole both of Columbus, GA; four grandchildren, Brandy, Chad and Kylie Dale Hammond all of Eufaula, AL and Anslee Hammond of Columbus, GA; thee step-grandchildren, Sasha Gardner of Columbus, GA, Grace and Ethan Poole of Jacksonville, FL.
