Julia Banks Smith

March 20, 1947 - March 15, 2025

Athens, Georgia - With profound love and deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Julia Banks Smith, 77, of Athens, GA, on March 15, 2025, in Winder, GA. Born on March 20, 1947, in Columbus, GA, she was the beloved daughter of the late Lonnie Banks and Frances Mae Banks (Williams). She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Lonnie Banks Jr. and Frank Banks.

Julia's life was one of adventure, dedication, and service. She spent her formative years in Buffalo, NY, Hurtsboro, AL, and Columbus, GA, and graduated from Spencer High School in 1966. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Albany State University and a master's degree from Drury University. After graduating from Albany State, she married her high school sweetheart, Ulysses, and embraced the journey of an Army wife. Together, they traveled the world, making homes and touching lives in Stuttgart, Germany; Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Fort Polk, Louisiana; Seoul, South Korea; Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Ludwigsburg, Germany; and Ramstein, Germanyall while raising their three children.

A passionate educator, Julia dedicated 34 years to shaping young minds as an elementary school teacher. Her commitment extended far beyond the classroommentoring students as a Student Council and Yearbook advisor and inspiring generations with her patience, wisdom, and unwavering support. Her impact as a teacher will live on through the many lives she has influenced.

Beyond her career, Julia was a proud 50-year member of the Delta Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She remained active with her Sorors wherever she was stationed, embodying the values of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. She was known for her strength, integrity, and love for family and community. A devoted Atlanta Braves and Falcons fan, she rarely missed a game, no matter what time zone she was in. She also found joy in traveling, bowling, and spending cherished moments with her grandchildren.

Julia is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Retired Army Major Ulysses Smith Jr.; her brother, James Banks; her sister Patricia Banks; and her three children, Anissa Mull, Darryl Smith, and Syreeta Leaks. She also leaves behind eight treasured grandchildren: Mikayla Leaks, Ramiyah Leaks, Lawrence (Artie) Mull IV, Emmanuel (Mannie) Leaks, Eden Leaks, Edvin Leaks, Charles Mull, and Xalev Leaks.

A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home (West), Watkinsville, GA, at 6:00 PM, with visitation beginning at 4:00 PM.

The Omega Omega Service of Lifetime Member Julia Banks Smith will be held at 6:30 PM at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home (West), Watkinsville, GA. *Note that the Omega Omega Service is not a closed event. It is open to the public.

A graveside service will follow on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Green Acres Cemetery in Columbus, GA.

Funeral reception will be held immediately following the graveside service at Page Doleman Complex, 800 8th St, Columbus, GA

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Children's Organ Transplant Association - COTA Hope Fund, 2501 West COTA Drive, Bloomington, Indiana 47403, www.COTA.org.

Julia's legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
