She was born September 23, 1946 in Atlanta, GA to John Emerson and Elizabeth Hurt Starbuck. The family moved to Columbus, GA in 1948 where Illges attended Clubview Elementary and Columbus High School. Illges was a free-spirited woman who loved to travel and explore new places and experiences.
