Columbus, Georgia - Melvin J. Oliphant, 68, of Columbus passed on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at his residence. Graveside services will be conducted at 12:30 PM on Friday, February 5, 2021 in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, AL with military honors according to the Charles E. Huff's International Funeral Home, Inc.
Melvin J. Oliphant, Jr. was born in Evanston, IL on December 2, 1952 to Lucy Jean Caldwell and the late Melvin Oliphant. "Butch," as he was affectionately called by his family, graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1971. After high school, Melvin worked at G.D. Searle for a number of years and married Pamela Cooper June 6, 1971. Melvin joined the United States Army in February 1976 where he served his country and received the following honors and awards: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Star, Noncommissioned Officer's Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 3 and Kuwait Liberation Medals during Desert Storm. Melvin was stationed in Fort Benning, GA and retired in 1999 as a 1SG.
Melvin was preceded in death by his father, Melvin J. Oliphant; his sister, Patricia A. Oliphant and his brother, Anthony W. Oliphant.
Melvin is survived by his mother Lucy Jean Caldwell, three brothers Timothy, Michael and Jerry Lee Oliphant, three sisters Gwendolyn, Mary Elizabeth and Lillian Denise, his children Melvin, Mario, Victoria, Cory and Joseph, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren other relatives and friends.
