Robert "Bob" Carroll Greene December 14, 1923- January 1, 2006 PHENIX CITY, AL— Robert "Bob" Carroll Greene, Sr., 82, of Phenix City died Sunday morning January 1, 2006 at his home. Graveside services will be held 2 pm est.Tuesday January 3, 2006 at Riverdale Cemetery with Rev. Bob Crumbley, Rev. Charles Langford, and Rev. Laura Eason officiating according to Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City. The family will remain at the graveside and greet friends after the service. Mr. Greene was born December 14, 1923 in Daviston, Alabama and was the son of the late Virgil R. Greene and Leslie Mitchell Greene. Bob graduated from Columbus High School in 1941 and attended Auburn University. During World War II, he left Auburn and enlisted in US Army. After completing officer candidate school at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Bob was voted by his fellow classmates as the officer they would most like to lead them in combat. He was commissioned as a second Lieutenant and served as forward observer in the 402nd Field Artillery which was part of the Rainbow Division. Bob served in combat in France, Austria, and Germany. During his military service he earned a bronze star, purple heart, seven combat ribbons, and attained the rank Captain. He married Cora Reid Smoot of Wetumpka, Alabama in 1946. Bob returned to Auburn University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation he started his own construction business. President Lyndon Johnson appointed Bob as postmaster of the Phenix City, Alabama Post Office where he served as postmaster for 27 years. During his lifetime, Bob was a member of various charitable and civic organizations. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church since 1933, and served his church as a Trustee, member of the Administrative Council, and was Charter President of Trinity United Methodist's Men's Club. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Jane Gullatt Sunday School Class, and was on the board of directors of CB&T Bank of East Alabama. Bob is survived by: his wife, Cora Reid Smoot Greene, three sons, Robert Carroll Greene, Jr., George Roy Greene, and John Walter Greene and daughter in law Teresa Boren Greene, two grandchildren, Kathryn Lacey Greene, and John Boren Greene, all of Phenix City; a brother, Roy M. Greene and sister in law, Janie M. Greene of Seale, Alabama; sister, Elly Ann Eason and brother in law, Walter S. Eason of Columbus, Georgia; a favorite aunt, Stella L. Mitchell of Phenix City, and a brother in law, George F. Smoot of Columbus, Georgia, several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to Trinity United Methodist Church, P O Box 490 Phenix City, Alabama 36868
