Robert Miller Obituary

Robert J. Miller
July 10, 1932 - June 11, 2023
Columbus, Georgia - On June 11, 2023, Robert "Bob" Miller, Sr. 90, passed peacefully at his home, receiving in-home hospice care. Bob was born July 10, 1932 in Belleville, Illinois, son of Robert F. and Mary Ann Nugent Miller.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean Marie Fuller Miller of 65 years. Their son, Robert "Bobby" James Miller, Jr. of Westmont, Illinois, LTC (Retired) Mary Elizabeth Miller Tenhet and her husband, MG (Retired) Robert David Tenhet of Swansea, Massachusetts, and Black Mountain, North Carolina, and his Brother-in-law COL (Retired) John D. Fuller and his wife, Sara of Freeport, Florida. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Ann Nugent Miller of Belleville, Illinois and his sister JoAnn Miller Sekosky and her husband of Rocky River, Ohio.
Bob will be fondly remembered by all his loving family, friends and the thousands of students he served. Bob was a positive, jovial mentor, always exhibiting a warm smile and genuine concern for all who crossed his path. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri in 1955, later receiving his Master's degree in Education from University of Illinois, in 1959. He was proud to serve his country during the Korean War. Stationed at Fort Belvoir in Virginia he taught in the Engineer School as well as play on the Army Basketball team. He had a passion for basketball whether playing, refereeing or coaching the game. Bob, upon discharge entered the field of education. He taught all levels and became a Principal of Litchfield High School 1969-1972. The last 14 years, 1972-1986 of his career, he was Principal of Taylorville High School, Taylorville, Illinois. Following his 30 years in Education, Bob and Jean retired in Columbus, GA in 1989. He was active in the community, coaching a softball team for All Saints Presbyterian Church, a member of St. Thomas Church and later became a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. At one point he served on the vestry as well as being a Lay Episcopal Minister. Bob was happiest serving in several capacities such as coaching, playing basketball, softball, mentoring students, always putting a smile on another person's face, brightening their day. He always seemed to demonstrate God's love to others. Bob liked people! People liked Bob.
A Celebration of Life Funeral Mass will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1130 First Avenue, Columbus, GA 31901 on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 2:00PM. Father Andy Blakemore will be the celebrant. Visitation with family and friends one hour prior to service. Interment will take place in Belleville, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations to Trinity Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
One of our Dad's favorite scriptures was "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:34-35) We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8).
