Roosevelt Turner Obituary

Roosevelt (Jack) Turner, Jr., A Soldier's Soldier, CSM, Green Beret, (Retired) was born to Mary Eva Turner and Jack Roosevelt Turner, SR. with Grandmother, Mrs. Mary Stewart in attendance, on October 18, 1944 in Columbus, GA in the Woodland Park Area. He attended Manley Taylor Elementary School, Spencer Junior High School and Wm. H. Spencer Senior High School, Columbus, GA finishing, in arguably, the smartest class ever from Spencer High School in 1962.

Jack, as most people called him, decided to enter the U.S. Army, in 1962, rather that accept a scholarship to engineering School at Hampton Institute (now University), Virginia. After basic training, he became an airborne soldier, then Ranger. He entered the Special Forces training and became a Greet Beret. He completed 3+ tours in Viet Nam where he was awarded 4 Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and other commendations. He entered Sergeant Major School as one of the youngest candidates ever. He completed that course and later graduated from Command Sargeant Major School. Jack's other duty stations included several orders to the Canal Zone – Panama, Germany and some stateside posts, including Fort Hood, from which he retired in 1992, after 30 years in the military. He made his home in Killeen, Texas after his last assignment. Jack went to the Middle East after 9/11 and spent 10 + years in Iraq, or where needed, as a contractor.
