Thomas Flournoy Obituary

Thomas Moffett Flournoy Jr.

January 28, 1942 - April 29, 2025

Columbus, Georgia - Thomas Moffett "Tim" Flournoy, Jr. passed away on April 29, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on January 28, 1942, he was the son of the late Judge Thomas Moffett Flournoy, Sr. and Mrs. Nell Kimbrough Flournoy.

Tim was a proud Georgian, Marine, and respected attorney. He attended Columbus College before earning both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Georgia. While in Athens, Tim reveled with KA fraternity brothers, roared for the Dawgs, and fell for the love of his life, Sydney. Before beginning his lifelong legal career in Columbus, Tim served as a Captain and Judge Advocate in the United States Marine Corps. He went on to practice law for over fifty years. He was known for his unique personal brand, sharp mind and his colorful and clever closing arguments. Some of his clients even called him The Water Walker. While he was a dedicated man of the law, he lived by his own rules.

Beyond the courtroom, Tim was happiest outdoors-golfing with his buddies, fishing and hunting, grilling in the backyard, sitting with beloved dogs, walking around the park, strolling down a sunny Sea Island shore, and dancing in the driveway to his favorite tunes. Tim had a mischievous wit, a knack for spinning a good yarn, and a one-liner for every occasion. For years, he dazzled his family around the dinner table with dramatic deliveries of stories with dashes of truth and heaps of humor.

Tim is survived by his wife, Sydney Flournoy; their children, Moffett Flournoy (Molly), Sydney Petty (Jonathan), and Clare Hooks (David); and five adored grandchildren: Eli, Law, Syd, Henry, and Lucy. He is also survived by his sisters, Becky Matthews and Barbara Wyatt (Charles).

The family is grateful to his devoted caregivers and dear friends for their support and kindness.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a charity of your choice, taking a moment to enjoy the outdoors, and sharing a good story and hearty laugh in his memory.
