Ellenwood, Georgia - Walter Daniel Edmonds,93, of Ellenwood, GA passed on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at his residence. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at First Baptist of Gresham Road, 2394 Gresham Road, SE Atlanta, GA 30316 according to the Charles E. Huff's International Funeral Home, Inc.
Mr. Walter D. Edmonds was born the second of 13 children of Walter "Peter" and Millie Carter Edmonds on November 19, 1928, in Columbus, GA. To family and friends he was affectionately known as "Hoppy" and was educated at Radcliffe School where he finished in the class of 1944 at the age of 16. He immediately left Columbus headed to Chicago to secure employment so he could send money back home to help with the family. In 1948, Hoppy married Anne Clotee Hawk (deceased, 1995) from Columbus and to this union was born two daughters, Genevelyn Edmonds Jenkins (deceased, 2010) and Bevelyn Edmonds. Hoppy held several jobs in Chicago before landing a position as a bus driver with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). Hoppy had a long and successful career with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. It was at the beginning of his tenure with the company when Walter met and married Carolyn Cunningham and to that union one daughter was born, Tanya Edmonds Woods. Walter later married Collette Hughes in 1973 and they later relocated to Lithonia, GA, where he continued his career with Met Life. Walter retired with 32 years of dedicated service in 1992. Walter had a strong faith in God and was raised in Rose Hill Baptist Church in Columbus, Antioch Baptist Church in Chicago and First Baptist Church of Gresham in Atlanta where he served as a faithful member until his failing health prevented regular attendance.
Walter leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife, Collette Edmonds; two daughters, Bevelyn Edmonds, Atlanta and Tanya Woods, Chicago; two daughters-in-law, Camele Burke and Kamisha Burke; two brothers, Albert J. (Jacquelyn) Edmonds, Burke, VA and William (Treva) Edmonds, Greenville, TN; three sisters, Mary Helen Lowe, Long Beach, CA, Mattie Frances (Carl) Halford, Columbus and Geraldine E. Dodson, East Point, GA; nine grandchildren, Charonda (Bruce, Sr.) Huff, Columbus, Kyra D. Woods, Chicago, Cameron Woods, Los Angeles, CA, Kyle Burke, Wilmington, DE, Billy D. (Nia) Burke, Ellenwood, GA, Caleb Burke, Savannah, Nikholas Washington, twins: Ajami Burke and Natasha Burke, Griffin, GA; four great-grandchildren, Anthony J. Huff Smyrna, GA, Bruce Huff, Jr., Columbus, Maci Lee Burke, and Billy D. Burke, IV both of Ellenwood and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends.
