Windermere, Florida - Wayne Bundrick passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 22 after a nearly 20 year battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Wayne was born in Columbus, Georgia to MC and Ruby Bundrick. He grew up in Columbus graduating from Columbus High School. He attended Auburn University where he majored in Graphic Design. Hewas a talented artist but his main love was flying. While at Auburn, he served in the Air Force ROTC.
Upon graduation, Wayne entered the US Air Force serving for six years and rising to the rank of Captain. He served at Laughlin AFB in Texas and Craig AFB in Alabama flying T-38 fighter jets as well as training other pilots.
In 1969, Wayne joined Delta Air Lines as a pilot based in Atlanta, Georgia. He flew DC9, MD88 and MD11 aircraft for Delta serving as a Flight Trainer for many years as well. He served as Chief Pilot for the base in Portland, Oregon for two years late in his career but returned to Atlanta to fly international trips for his last year. He retired in 1997 after 28 years.
Aside from travel, Wayne loved great food and wine. He and his wife Helen were members of the Chaine des Rotisseurs gastronomy society. They also loved to play golf. He had a beautiful voice and was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Chorus. His lifelong love of art led him to be a docent at the Ringling Musuem in Sarasota, Florida after he retired from Delta. He enjoyed portraying John Ringling in the musuem's annual Ringling festival.
Wayne spent the last three years in assisted living in Windermere, Florida where he was cared for by a wonderful team of private aides and staff. He enjoyed playing Rummikub with his buddies and listening to the entertainers who came for weekly happy hours. His other great passions were cheering on his beloved Auburn Tigers in all sports and watching the Atlanta Braves games every day.
He is preceded in death by his wife Helen Bundrick.
He is survived by his daughters Janet Burnley (Rick) of Windermere, Florida and Jenny Bridges (Joel) of Atlanta, Georgia; his sister Ann Kelley of Troy, Alabama and his grandson, Ben Burnley (Katie) of Arlington, Virginia.
In accordance with his wishes, there is no formal service planned. The family will hold a celebration of life at a later time with details to be shared at that time. Those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to donate to either The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (Michaeljfox.org) or the National Parkinson's Foundation (Parkinson.org) in hopes of finding a cure for this terrible disease.
