Afeni Shakur Obituary

Afeni Shakur, the mother of the late hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur, died May 2, according to multiple news sources. She was 69.

Shakur died at a hospital in Sausalito, California, after authorities responded to a report about a possible cardiac arrest at her home, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Her death came nearly 20 years after the death of her son.

Shakur, who was born Alice Faye Williams Jan. 10, 1947, was known best for setting up the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation with the profits off of her son’s posthumous albums. The philanthropic effort, based in Georgia, funds art programs for young people. She also formed Amaru Entertainment, the holding company for her son’s unreleased material.

In addition to philanthropy work, Shakur has traveled extensively, making guest appearances and giving lectures. She delivered the keynote address Feb. 6, 2007, for Vanderbilt University’s Commemoration for Black History Month.

Tupac Shakur, who was born in 1971 in New York City, was known best by his stage name 2Pac. The rapper has sold more than 75 million albums globally, making him one of the world’s best-selling music artists in the world. He rapped about his upbringing amid poverty, violence, and racism. Shakur was shot and killed in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1996.

Never once have I had the pleasure of meeting neither one of you, however I have followed both your works since before I was a teenager. My heart still mourns for Tupac Amaru and what could've been. Now that you have each other again it makes everything better. My sister is in Heaven also, when I visit with her I always say tell my heart (Tupac) I said Hi! Rest BEAUTIFULLY in POWER reunited with your Son.
