Aidan Silitch Obituary

- Aidan Cameron Silitch, 17, died tragically on Thursday, March 21, 2019 in a ski mountaineering accident on the North Face of the Aiguille du Tacul in Chamonix, France. Born on March 10, 2002 in Greenwich Village, New York, he was the beloved son of Nicholas and Regina (Haughney) Silitch and the adored younger brother of Kyra and Owen. He was a graduate of St Luke's School in the West Village and was a junior at The Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn, New York.

Aidan was brave, kind, resilient, generous and compassionate. He was also whip-smart, fierce and funny. He had an infectious smile, loved to laugh, and looked out for the underdog; he made the unsure feel sure. He was true to himself and inspired confidence and a sense of well-being in others. He found great joy in his family, his friends, his love of the outdoors, and the pursuit of knowledge.

An exceptional climber, Aidan was a cherished member of the climbing community at The Cliffs in Long Island City. He started with his older siblings when he was 13 and it quickly became his passion. He successfully competed around the country, traveling to Nationals in Bend, Oregon and professional competitions, where he recently made his first final in Albany, NY.

Aidan was also an adored member of his community in Dublin, NH where he was a source of warmth and brightness for everyone. He will be remembered as a force of joy by his extended family and friends in Dublin, in New York and in every community he touched.

In addition to his parents and siblings, Aidan leaves behind his second family Marc, Carol, Tyler and Josh Lane, his grandmother, Mary Haughney, and many other beloved friends, mentors and family members.

He was the best of us. A true Viking.

There will be a Celebration of Aidan's life at The Church of Saint Luke in the Field, 487 Hudson Street, New York, NY on Sunday, April 7th, 2019 at 4:30pm. The Celebration will continue at: The Cliffs at LIC, 11-11 4th Drive, Queens, NY at 7pm. Attire: Dress to climb, really, even to the service. Aidan hated formal clothes.

I started climbing at Brooklyn Boulders some years ago and remember seeing Aiden around when he was just starting out. He regularly used to rope climb with a young lady and I recall thinking that they two of them were such nice kids. Fast-forward a couple years and I was amazed and how accomplished a climber he had become in such a short period of time. I've watched him a number of times putting down some incredibly hard routes with intense focus followed by a humility and happiness. My heart breaks for your family and loved ones. Sending warmth from the extended climbing community.

Aiden was always smiling, always laughing. He was a beautiful soul who cared deeply about his passions and his friends. The happiness and enthusiasm that he brought to anything that he did was always truly remarkable, admirable, and inspirational. Though he is gone, his positivity, his energy, and his impact on my life and countless other lives will remain forever.

I had the privilege of sharing a class with Aidan earlier this year. He was always kind and funny, and from the first day in Human Anatomy & Physiology it was apparent that his knowledge for this subject was strong. Aidan set a gold standard that I aimed to meet daily, and he made me a better student by doing so.

Aidan, thanks for pushing me, teaching me, and being your fun self along the way. It is hard to believe that you aren't with us anymore. You will be missed.

There are certain students who will always stand out no matter how many years you have been in the classroom. Aidan is one of those young men who left a lasting impression on me as an educator. I became a better teacher because of Aidan, and appreciate my vocation all the more for having had the privilege of being his teacher. To the Silitch family,
I have no words to express my deepest condolences to you.
All I can say is that, as you know, Aidan was a fiercely brilliant, funny, and opinionated young individual. I had the great privilege of watching him grow as a writer and person for two years while I served as his editor on the Blotter (The Berkeley Carroll School Student Newspaper) where he never failed to write insightful, important, and thought-provoking articles. It feels like just yesterday he was making us all laugh during a meeting. I feel very lucky to have known Aidan and I know we will all miss him very much.

Dear Aidan's family,

My son, Bex, (aged 9) adored Aidan. Bex joined the Vikings in September 2017 and Aidan was the very first person that spoke to him. I appreciated how kind, patient, and helpful Aidan was to Bex - a true example of how to be a teammate. As Bex grew more comfortable at The Cliffs, he made sure to always talk to the new kids on the team - "like Aidan talked to me before I had friends here." Bex admired Aidan as a climber, but was drawn to him as a person. Thank you for sharing your bright light of a son with all of us at The Cliffs. His presence is an integral part of the fabric of the team, and is already sorely missed. Your family remains in our thoughts and prayers during this season of sorrow.

I remember watching this young man climb at the gym. He has always climbed with extraordinary technique and skill. He will perform maneuvers and climbing moves that 99% of the gym cannot do or even think of doing. I remember him doing heel hooks that were perfect technique on a high level problem. I also remember him cheering on the rest of the climbers at the gym who were just climbing for fun. It is a tragic loss of one of the strongest climbers at the gym.
